Rumors of a Tom Cruise scary movie project have turned out to be true, as director Doug Liman recently confirmed that he and Cruise are working on a horror project, the first in the genre for either.

During a screening of the documentary Gaucho Gaucho last week, Liman spoke to Showbiz 411, where he confirmed that he and Cruise are planning to make a “scary” movie together. He didn’t expand much upon the project, but noted that it would be both he and Cruise’s first time tackling this kind of movie.

“I have never done one,” said Liman. “And neither has Tom Cruise.”

What do we know about Tom Cruise’s scary movie project?

Rumors of a Tom Cruise-led scary movie have been floating around for nearly the entire year. In August, movie insider Daniel Richtman mentioned that the pair were in talks to make the film, with Warner Bros. Discovery producing the project. At the time of the report, the project was known as Deeper, although it’s unknown if the name will stick.

Deeper has been around for nearly a full decade, and was initially a script written by Max Landis. Multiple stars have been attached to the project since, including Idris Elba, Bradley Cooper, and Gal Gadot. The project also had two separate directors, Kornel Mundruczo and Baltasar Kormakur, attached to direct the film at some point.

It’s currently unclear if the film’s script will remain the same, or be changed in any way. No other information about the project is known. Liman and Cruise have worked together several times in their Hollywood careers, most notably on the 2014 sci-fi film Edge of Tomorrow, as well as 2017’s action movie American Made.

Director Parker Finn opened up about Smile 2‘s terrifying hallway scene, which was created to look like a dance sequence. Since its theatrical debut, the Naomi Scott-led horror sequel has received a Certified Fresh score of 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 195 reviews.

“About to embark on a new world tour, global pop sensation Skye Riley begins experiencing increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events,” reads the synopsis. “Overwhelmed by the escalating horrors and the pressures of fame, Skye is forced to face her dark past to regain control of her life before it spirals out of control.”

How Smile 2’s terrifying hallway scene was made

During an interview with ComingSoon, Finn revealed they worked with dance choreographer Celia Rowlson-Hawl to bring Smile 2’s terrifying hallway scene to life. He also recalled how it exciting it was to shoot the iconic sequence, and confirmed that everyone on set was impressed.

“This scene was fully choreographed. I worked with my choreographer, Celia Rowlson-Hall, and several of the troupe in there are from her backup dancers as well. So there’s that continuity,” Finn shared. “We always talked about it almost feeling like… I was curious to see if I could do something that felt just as much Hideo Nakata as it does Bob Fosse, you know? So we talked about like All That Jazz and that sort of thing.”

He continued, “But the trick of it was creating this red light, green light game that instantly the Smiler starts cheating at. So you can’t quite wrap your hands around the rules of it. The trick was that Naomi was at the center of this choreography, but for her, it needed to feel like she was just reacting and not performing the steps of what really is almost like a dance. I’m really excited about how it came together and how it starts playful and creepy but then takes this turn and becomes incredibly violating, violent, awful, and nightmarish.”

Smile 2 is once again written and directed by Parker Finn. The first installment was based on his 2020 short film Laura Hasn’t Slept. Additional cast includes Raúl Castillo, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Daphne Zelle, Zebedee Row, and A Nightmare on Elm Street alum Kyle Gallner. It is produced by Finn, Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, Isaac Klausner, and Robert Salerno.

Hereditary star Milly Shapiro is returning to horror with The Hallowarrior, an upcoming horror thriller described as a post-apocalyptic feature “with a Halloween twist.” 

The Hallowarrior is written and directed by Ben Sottak, based on his short film Scavenger. The film, which has already finished production in Syracuse, N.Y., follows plague survivor Pumpkin (set to be played by Shapiro), who also happens to be the last girl on earth. 

Who else is in The Hallowarrior cast?

According to Variety, Shapiro will be joined by A Knight’s Tale star Shannyn Sossamon in the upcoming horror movie. Rounding out the cast are Ajani Russell (Betty) and AJ Bowen (You’re Next). 

Per the outlet’s description, The Hallowarrior will see Shapiro’s Pumpkin “scavenging the wasteland for supplies on the eve of Halloween. Pumpkin’s lonely holiday ritual is interrupted by the arrival of a savage gang of raiders at her doorstep, led by the fearsome Thalia (Sossamon). Outnumbered and armed with candy, wit and weapons, Pumpkin must ferociously fight back to survive the night.”

Sossamon, meanwhile, is known for starring in 40 Days and 40 Nights, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Wristcutters: A Love Story, The Holiday, One Missed Call, Sinister 2, and Backspot, among others. Sossamon also executive produces the movie in addition to starring. 

No release date has been set yet for The Hallowarrior.

Universal Pictures and Blumhouse have announced the Speak No Evil Peacock release date for the upcoming streaming debut of its latest psychological thriller movie starring Golden Globe nominee James McAvoy (X-Men: First Class). It currently holds a Certified Fresh of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 200 reviews. During its theatrical run, the film earned a worldwide gross of over $76 million at box office.

When is the Speak No Evil Peacock release date?

Speak No Evil will offiicially be available for streaming starting on December 6, exclusively on Peacock. The film consists of stars Mackenzie Davis (Terminator: Dark Fate), Scoot McNairy (A Quiet Place Part II), Alix West Lefler (The Good Nurse), Aisling Franciosi (Game of Thrones), and Dan Hough.

Smile director Parker Finn came back with an even larger and more twisted sequel. Now available on digital, Smile 2 stars Naomi Scott in the lead role and features some incredible moments. Finn discussed filming some of the horror movie’s key scenes with ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese.

Tyler Treese: I wanted to ask you about the opening with Kyle Gallner. It’s great connective tissue, obviously, but it almost feels like a totally different genre. It’s this very tense action thriller. You really get to show some range there. What did you like most about just setting the tone with this very dramatic, very intense opening?

Parker Finn: Well, thank you, first of all. I knew that this second film was such a big swing that it was gonna have its own sort of identity and feel. The world of Skye Riley was gonna feel so sort of disparate from the first one. So I wanted to have that connective tissue, both for narrative means and also to just connect the two worlds, but at the same time, I wanna make sure that we were sort of coming outta the gate with a bang, with something that felt totally different than anything we’d seen in the first film.

I love Kyle Gallner. We became really good friends working on the first one, and I was very excited to get to bring him back. From the point when I was writing it, I knew that I wanted that opening sequence to sort of unfold in a single unbroken take. Because I knew it really would add to the claustrophobia, the stress that the character is feeling, and how it just keeps getting worse and worse, and things keep going wrong. It felt like a really exciting idea. We went into it thinking, “Hey, this is something that can almost stand-alone, like its own short film that feels sort of like action thriller-y, but also is like announcing, ‘Hey, Smile is back, and it’s meaner than ever.'”

I wanted to also ask you about the hallway scene. It became instantly iconic in the trailers, and it really delivers in the full film. I was curious about the logistics of filming something like that. Is it more almost like choreography or like a fight scene?

Thank you very much. That was a very exciting scene to take on. It also freaked me out because it was, again, something that, when I was writing it, I knew if we executed it correctly, it could almost transcend the genre and become its own unique thing. But it was gonna walk that line. Because if we didn’t nail it, it was just gonna fall on its face. So, we set up Skye’s choreography throughout the film, always knowing that it’s gonna lead us towards this scene.

So, yes, this scene was fully choreographed. I worked with my choreographer, Celia Rowlson-Hall, and several of the troupe in there are from her backup dancers as well. So there’s that continuity. You mentioned the Smiler breaking the rules, and I wanted to ask you about just the usage of rules within the film because people can get really bogged down on the specifics of what the demon can do and what the rules are to this universe. How do you balance that with just wanting to surprise the audience and have it work thematically?

Well, I take that as such a compliment when people obsess over those details. So, there’s a couple things I’ll say. First is that in the film, there are sound internal rules and logic at work, but just because we’ve seen the first film doesn’t mean we know everything about the Smiler. So, in talking with my producers and stuff, we sort of have all this information that we know about the Smiler that then informs what happens in the film, but we don’t give the audience everything, or at least we don’t spoonfeed it. But especially upon rewatch, there’s stuff, there are clues along the way, and it was important to me that each character that interacts with it sort of has a different relationship with it.

At the same time for me, I’m always interested in the character’s story. This is an intensely psychological film that really places you inside the head of a character. So what I really am chasing is emotional truth. That’s the thing that matters the most to me. That’s the thing that I think we take away from the movie more than anything is Skye’s journey through the film. So it’s about balancing the rules and the lore and making sure that that doesn’t become a trap that we get bogged down in, but something that is sort of this machine that Skye has been put inside, but that our focus is really about Skye’s emotional state and her emotional journey.

I wanted to ask about the audition process for you because the smile is such a particular thing. Have you ever had anybody who was really good for a role but just could not get the smile down?

For me, when I do cast, I’m always casting for a performance, knowing that the smile is something I can coach down the road. I think that the smile is actually less difficult than people think it is. But it’s just about doing things really specifically. The way it works is to have people do a slightly too wide smile, but something that you would still consider friendly, right? Imagine you’re posing for a photo with friends. It’s that sort of smile, but it’s about disconnecting the eyes from it.

The eyes are really the trick about the smile, and it’s kind of this very dead-eyed, unblinking stare. We do a little bit of head positioning, sort of hearkening back to the Kubrick stare. We were almost looking up from underneath your brow a little bit. It’s really about that. Then, mixed with the framing, the color palette, the sound design, and all that stuff coming together, can create a really unsettling moment.

Some actors come in really prepared, and I can tell they’ve been practicing. Other ones come in terrified of the smile. It’s the thing that scares them the most. Then it’s usually just about us going into a mirror and sort of doing it together and really getting them to understand it.

Cineverse has announced the Terrifier 3 4K, Blu-ray, and VOD release dates for the latest installment of the popular horror slasher franchise. This comes after more than a month since the movie made its theatrical release.

Shout! Studios has announced the Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 Blu-ray release date for the latest sequel to 2023’s horror slasher movie, based on A. A. Milne and E. H. Shepard’s classic children’s book. This comes after eight months since Blood and Honey 2 made its theatrical debut, which earned a total gross of $7.6 million at the box office against a reported budget of $500,000.

When is the Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 Blu-ray release date?

Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 will be available to purchase on Blu-ray starting on Tuesday, December 10. The Blu-ray will also include bonus features such as the film’s trailer and image gallery.

Heretic directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods have opened up about their ideas for a potential sequel to A24‘s newest psychological horror movie. This comes after the Hugh Grant-led movie just made its theatrical release less than a week ago. So far, the film has already earned a Certified Fresh rating of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.

What to expect from the Heretic directors’ potential spiritual sequel?

During a recent interview, Beck confirmed that he and Woods already have discussed ideas for a spiritual sequel to Heretic, such as delving into religion and cults.

“There are some things on deck that we’ve talked out specifically that feel like spiritual sequels,” Beck said (via Variety). “They delve into religion, cults or other hot-button items that we want to see on the screen that go to uncomfortable places. What was exciting about Heretic was we’ve seen many movies that might be religious in nature, but aren’t necessarily providing a foundation of a conversation that you can walk away with. If you want to keep engaging with it by having conversations about the ideas with your friends, family or loved ones, you can have that there. We find ourselves in such a divisive, polarizing world at times that there’s so much discourse we’re still very captivated by. We want to feed that into a couple of the upcoming projects.”

Heretic was directed by Beck and Woods, who are best known for co-writing 2018’s A Quiet Place movie with John Krasinski. The film also stars Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets) as Sister Barnes, Topher Grace (That ’70s Show) as Elder Kennedy, Chloe East (The Fabelmans) as Sister Paxton, and Elle Young as Prophet. Jersey Shore star Jenni Farley, also known as “JWoww,” is now a writer and director with Devon. Her first horror movie is out today on Screambox, and she spoke with ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese about the spooky filming that took place in an actual asylum.

“Devon’s parents never stopped searching for answers after her disappearance from a notorious asylum. Years after the incident, a mysterious website draws five adventurers to the abandoned asylum where she was last seen. Armed with cameras, they plunge into the darkness, unaware they’re filming their own descent into horror—never meant to return,” says the synopsis.

Tyler Treese: I love that Devon was shot on location at Pennhurst Asylum. It gives such a great feel to the whole film. How was it filming there? I would be on edge the entire time. Did anything creepy happen?

Jenni Farley: The whole freaking time [during Devon]! Listen, so if I could take a minute back in 2011 or ’12, I shot Snooki & JWoww there, and I didn’t have any paranormal experiences, so I kind of was like brushing it off and being like, “This would be the best place to shoot a horror film” because I didn’t believe in it at the time, but the canvas [is perfect], right? The area is so incredible.

Cut to 2020, when we’re trying to film this movie, and so many things happened. We developed at one point a buddy system because the moment somebody would go away, and I’m talking people that I’ve known for 15 years, I would hear screaming, and then they would start crying, and then they would swear that they saw a little boy running in the woods and we need to call 9-1-1. I had my actress Tara [Rule] hysterically crying saying that there was a little boy that ran across, we need to go get help.

We would be shooting, and we would have all our cameras lined up; We’d reboot them, everything’s good to go, and you would just see one by one, just like boom, boom, boom, boom. They would all die like a gust of wind would hit them, and I would just be sitting there. At one point, I was yelling at them like I’m their mom. Like, “We need to get it together. If you want me out of your building, you need to stop.” Because I think they were kids just truly messing with us. They weren’t vicious, they weren’t malicious, they weren’t mean. I really think that these [spirits], based on the manager and the people that work there, there’s children there and they were trying to play with us and mess with us.

At one point, we actually have it in one of the shots, like a ball that just got caught on my security camera, just moving. We played that footage back, and I’m like, “Did anyone move that?” And they’re like,”No. Nobody was even there.”

That wasn’t planned?

No. Then you had Tara, who plays Kat, where someone walks behind her, and she says we have to submit the real footage because nobody was there. I have three angles of that same take; nobody walked behind her, and yet something gusted right by. So there are things, true elements that we have, but that’s the best part of being on set, and your set becomes the horror movie.

The movie’s concept changed a little bit, and the cuts changed a little bit because I wanted that natural element, and I never gave the actors the full script. I would just give them what they needed, very Blair Witch perspective because not only could something change based on that ball or just something organically happening, but if they’re in a real state of fear, which a lot of them were because I freaking locked the door behind them and said, “Adios.” They’re set in there on their own. Those natural elements alone could play a part, and it really did for this film. I think that’s what made it successful if you liked it. I believe that it was just the natural setting that made it likable.

I would not last a single day on your set, but the energy it just brought to the film clearly shows. So you’re a full-on believer after this filming experience?

I am. I had to take a step back and be like, “Is my life gonna change?” Being such a believer and I’m a super fan of Pennhurst. I wanna go there. I wanna sleep there now. I wanna see my kids that I left there. I’m like, “What have you been doing the last four years?” I’m a super believer.

Do you have the bug now? Do you feel like you’re gonna keep directing, writing, and being creative?

I said the worst part of this was how much I fell in love with it because I’m gonna be unstoppable in this genre, in this element. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing because I’m going from a super fan to all I wanna do is make horror films, and I’m gonna harass and bother and berate anyone I need to [in order] to make another one as fast as I can because it’s such a beautiful industry and genre to be in.

When is the Double Exposure release date?

Double Exposure will be available to rent or purchase on all North American digital HD internet, cable, and satellite platforms, as well as on DVD, starting on February 18, 2025. Besides Cowan, the film will also be led by Alexander Calvert (Supernatural, Gen V) and Kahyun Kim (Cocaine Bear, St. Denis Medical).

The film is written and directed by Howard Goldberg, who is also producing alongside Julia Verdin. Additional cast includes Simon Kim, Christian Vunipola, Christopher Maleki, Sara Garcia, Anne DeSalvo, Chris Devlin, Jermain Hollman, and more. Prior to its VOD release, the film had its premiere at the Raindance Film Festival in London.

“It tells the story of a bride competing with a beautiful influencer who comes back from the dead to steal her husband. Peter drives, arguing on the phone with his wife, Lora, about their relationship. A horn blares. He swerves. He thinks there’s a crash and rushes to help, but there’s nothing. The phone rings. It’s Sara, his ex-girlfriend. We flashback to the photoshoot where Peter met both Sara, the model, and Lora, a law student moonlighting as a stylist. Intending to ask Lora out, a miscommunication makes him connect with Sara instead, after saving her from her creepy manager and her playboy photographer,” reads the synopsis.

“In the present, it’s revealed Sara has been dead for years, and it’s Peter’s guilt over her death that is fracturing his marriage. Sara tells Peter, she never really died. Peter wakes up. It was a dream! But he continues seeing her. He relives Sara’s descent into a world of drugs and alcohol. Then he relives the car crash, realizing he’s the one who crashed and is severely injured. A supernatural battle ensues as Sara seeks revenge against Peter, and Lora fights to save him. If Lora triumphs, Peter survives; if Sara wins, they reunite in an eternal love.”

Ridley Scott recently excited fans by announcing his new Alien movie. While it’s not known what that will be, the legendary filmmaker recently opened up about why a sequel to 2017’s Alien: Covenant makes a lot of sense.

What did Ridley Scott say about a potential Alien: Covenant sequel?

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Scott was asked about a sequel to Covenant, in a question joking that both Covenant and 2024’s Alien: Romulus end with ships headed off to unknown planets, setting up future projects. Scott said that to him, a Covenant sequel actually makes the most sense of the two, due to how things were left off.

“Covenant is the best one [for a sequel] because it leaves the girl in the [cryo pod] and [Michael Fassbender’s killer android] David has alien eggs and 2,000 colonists hanging around. It’s a perfect beginning,” said Scott.

News of a new Scott Alien movie came last week, when a report from THR noted that the filmmaker was in the process of working with 20th Century Studios on a new entry in the franchise. Scott also directed Romulus, which itself is getting a sequel, and is also releasing the highly anticipated Gladiator II later this year.

Scott kicked off the Alien franchise in 1979 with Alien starring Sigourney Weaver. That was followed by James Cameron’s Aliens in 1986 and a number of other sequels, including 1992’s Alien 3 and 1997’s Alien Resurrection.

Scott’s next project, which is expected to begin filming early next year, will be a biopic about the disco group the Bee Gees for Paramount.

Hugh Grant has had an incredible career. He’s the face of iconic romantic comedies like Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones‘s Diary, and Love Actually. However, he’s rebuilt himself as a character actor, and whether he’s an Oompa-Loompa in Wonka or Tony the Tiger in Unfrosted, he’s always entertaining to watch. He’s no stranger to villains, having played them in Paddington 2, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and Operation Fortune. Now, he plays a Heretic in a brilliantly crafted horror thriller from A24.

Heretic begins with two Mormon girls, played by Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East, going door to door trying to tell everyone about their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The dialogue is excellent, sensitively portraying them as a bit out of touch from people of other denominations as they discuss topics like pornography and sex. The screenplay only works because it doesn’t judge the characters; other characters judge them, and we have small moments with them to see not only their friendship but how stuff like The Book of Mormon affected them.

When the Sisters knock on the door of Mr. Reed, who mentions having a wife with a blueberry pie baking in the oven, they enter his home. However, as Mr. Reed begins to challenge their beliefs, the girls begin to realize they may never leave. The film makes a bold choice to not begin as a horror film. Too many horror movies are too apprehensive about easing their way into horror, leading to many films starting with a scary cold open. But Heretic takes its time, not being hasty with a single moment. It spends its time with Mr. Reed, setting him up as a charming, personable man. He’s kind on the surface and easy for the girls to talk to.

But he doesn’t stay that way for long. It’s always fun to see a movie star really throw himself into a villainous role where he gets to chew on the scenery. Grant seems to be having a blast. He doesn’t play this character like a villain; at a post-screening Q&A, he mentioned that he approached playing Mr. Reed like a nice college professor and studied real-life serial killers who used their charm as a weapon. He is marvelous in this film. There are times where you forget he’s supposed to be the villain, not only due to his performance, but also because his dialogue paints out a unique, layered perspective that questions the idea of organized religion. Some audience members may find themselves agreeing with his point of view.

But it’s a reasonably balanced film. Sister Barnes (played by Thatcher) challenges his point of view as much as he challenges them. The film is less concerned with being a consistently thrilling horror movie filled with jump scares, instead wanting you to ponder further on the messages. Heretic is a twisted, demented look at what happens when two religious Mormons come face to face with someone who is the antithesis of their beliefs. There’s also a sense of humor that works surprisingly well. Grant isn’t just giving a “dark and scary” performance. He’s hilarious in this film.

Scott Beck and Bryan Woods try something new with this intricate, thought-provoking film. They’re perhaps best known for their script for the original A Quiet Place, where they proved their ability to create a simple concept with powerful thrills and emotion. This dynamic duo has experimented with superficial sci-fi thrills in 65, the mid-2010s found footage trend with Nightlight, and a Stephen King adaptation with the underrated 2023 movie The Boogeyman. Heretic manages to feel different from everything we’ve seen from them before, and their work here is stellar.

The way that Heretic incorporates humor into the mix is quite ingenious. There are a lot of concepts that can be hard to break through. At times, it does feel like Mr. Reed is a professor giving a long lecture. A movie that lectures you could be exhausting, but the script makes it approachable by drawing parallels between religion and Monopoly. There are a few more parallels that Mr. Reed draws to other places, and everything feels informative, but it is also wonderfully dark because of the circumstances of the situation.

One of the only issues with Heretic is how it can sometimes immerse itself too much in its philosophical ideas that it does not push the characters to dark enough places. While there are emotional elements throughout, it feels a bit too surface-level. The film spends a lot of time with Mr. Reed attempting to demonstrate a “miracle” for the Sisters, but it could have benefitted from going down a route that more actively pushed the characters into physical danger. Although the movie contains at least one excellent jump scare, Heretic revels in its claustrophobia and feeling of dread. With superb performances and a sharp screenplay from Beck and Woods, Heretic is a sinfully good time at the movies.

SCORE: 7/10

As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 7 equates to “Good.” A successful piece of entertainment that is worth checking out, but it may not appeal to everyone.

What happens in the Devon clip?

The video provides viewers with a glimpse of one of the movie’s terrifying sequences. It features the main characters trying to determine where the scream they’ve just heard came from. However, things quickly took a turn after coming across a seemingly empty room.

Devon is written and directed by Jenni “JWoww’ Farley in her feature directorial debut. Farley first gained recognition for starring in the popular MTV reality show Jersey Shore, which ran on-air from 2009-2012. The horror thriller stars Tara Rule as Kat Rose, Hank Santos as Jared Stevens, Rotisha Geter as Alison Roberts, Lauren Carlin as Carly Carmichael, and Steven Etienne as William Edwards. It hails from Cineverse, with Farley also serving as an executive producer on the project.

The first official photo for the upcoming survival horror thriller movie Night Comes has been revealed. It provides the audiences with a first look at Dafne Keen and Samatha Lorraine, who are expected to play sisters.

This marks Keen’s first movie project, following her successful return as Laura/X-23 in Marvel Studios‘ Deadpool & Wolverine, which is currently the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. The young star also recently appeared as a Padawan in the Star Wars series The Acolyte. Besides Night Comes, she will also next be seen in Corin Hardy’s next horror movie Whistle with Yellowjackets’ Sophie Nelisse and Shaun of the Dead’s Nick Frost.

What is Night Comes about?

“The film unfolds against the backdrop of a cataclysmic event that threatens to engulf humanity,” reads the official synopsis (via Variety). “Two sisters manage to escape the horror only to find themselves thrust into a perilous struggle for survival, tasked with a mission that holds the fate of mankind in the balance.”

Inspired by Birdbox and The Descent, Night Comes is directed by Suicide Squad actor Jay Hernandez from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jason Bourque and Nancy Isaak. This marks Hernandez’s feature directorial debut. Besides Keen and Lorraine, The Hunger Games vet Alexander Ludwig is also set to appear in the movie. It is produced by Shaun Redick, Yvette Yates Redick, Jacky Lai, and Jayce Barreiro, with Hernandez, Keen, Jared Zhang, Graem Luis and Jason Bourque set as executive producers. The project hails from Big Picture Cinema, The Exchange and Impossible Dream Entertainment.

It was a big news day for the upcoming Pinocchio slasher, with Variety reporting that horror icon Robert Englund and others have joined the cast. The team behind the film also released a new video of the animatronic puppet in action.

Englund — most famous for playing the horror icon Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street films — will star in the upcoming film, titled Pinocchio: Unstrung. Alongside Englund, Variety also reports that Richard Brake – another mainstay in the world of horror – will join the film to star as Geppetto, the craftsman who creates Pinocchio in the iconic story.

Variety also debuted an image of the Pinocchio puppet, created by Emmy-winning special effects artist Todd Masters (Tales From the Crypt: Demon Knight, Child’s Play). Later in the day, the Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey social media account shared a full video of the animatronic puppet in action, scowling and moving its mouth at the camera.

What do we know about the Pinocchio slasher?

The upcoming Pinocchio film is the next in a long line of horror projects based on iconic characters that have seen their IP lapse into the public domain. The film was officially announced earlier this year, and will follow the story of James, the son of Geppetto, as he introduces Pinocchio to the world, which leads the puppet to trying to eliminate anything that he deems as bad.

Pinocchio: Unstrung will be part of The Twisted Childhood Universe, also known as the “Poohniverse.” The shared universe was conceived and created by director Rhys Frake-Waterfield, and will be comprised of a variety of horror films all based around various IPs. The first two Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey films are included, as are the upcoming Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, Bambi: The Reckoning, Pinocchio: Unstrung, and a 2025 ensemble film titled Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble.
