Netflix has released the official Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey? trailer for its newest documentary series, which will be available for streaming on November 25, 2024.

“On December 26, 1996, John and Patsy Ramsey woke up the morning after a loving family Christmas to discover their youngest child, six-year-old JonBenét, was missing, a chilling ransom note left downstairs,” reads the synopsis. “Later that day, John Ramsey discovered his daughter’s body in the basement, revealing the shocking truth that JonBenét had not been kidnapped, but was instead sexually assaulted and brutally murdered in their own home. The Boulder, Colorado police, who had little practical experience in homicide investigations, quickly cast suspicion on JonBenét’s family as the most likely suspects, fanning the flames of media scrutiny and largely one-sided reporting, turning the case into a national obsession. Twenty-eight years later, that obsession — and finger-pointing — hasn’t gone away, and the murder of JonBenét Ramsey remains unsolved.”

Check out the Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey trailer below (watch more trailers):

What happens in the Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey Trailer?

The video provides viewers with a glimpse of the streamer’s in-depth investigation of JonBenét Ramsey‘s shocking death. In 1996, the 6-year-old child beauty queen was murdered by an unknown assailant who left her body in her family’s basement. Nearly three decades since the unfortunate incident, the police still hasn’t identified the real culprit. The trailer also highlights how the murder case caught nationwide attention, after the Ramsey family members were accused as potential suspects.

Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey is a three-part docuseries directed and executive produced by Joe Berlinger. The documentary is executive produced by Craig D’Entrone, Jon Kamen, and Jen Isaacson, with Tim Young serving as a producer. It is a production by A RadicalMedia Production and Third Eye Motion Picture Company.

I’m Not A Monster: The Lois Riess Murders is directed and produced by Erin Lee Carr. It is produced by HBO Documentary Films, Imagine Documentaries, and Carr Lot Productions.

“In 2018, a small-town murder in Minnesota shocks a community when 56-year-old wife, mother, and grandmother Lois Riess kills her husband David and goes on the run from the authorities,” reads the synopsis. “Years later, Lois sits down with the filmmakers telling her story for the first time. Lois herself attempts to explain her reprehensible actions which reveals a disturbing family history and an addiction to gambling. The series explores criminality and accountability through the mystery of a middle-aged woman who couldn’t be further from the typical image of a cold-blooded, multiple murderer.”

In the video, Erik Menendez opened up about his brother Lyle’s emotional letter to him, after they were first arrested for the murder of their parents. Despite being instructed to destroy the letter right away, Erik decided to keep it because it was the first time that his brother expressed the pain he felt. According to Erik, the letter’s discovery was the reason why they had no choice but to reveal their family’s dark secret in court, because it hinted at their real reason for killing their parents.

“In 1996, Lyle and Erik Menendez were convicted for the murders of their parents in what became one of the most famous criminal cases of the late 20th century. For the first time in 30 years, and in their own words, both brothers revisit the trial that shocked the nation. Through extensive audio interviews with Lyle and Erik, lawyers involved in the trial, journalists who covered it, jurors, family, and other informed observers, the documentary offers new insight and a fresh perspective on a case that people only think they know.”

The Menendez Brothers documentary hails from acclaimed Argentinian director Alejandro Hartmann (Carmel: Who Killed Maria Marta?). It is executive produced by Ross Girard, Mark McCune, Dani Sloane, Gina Scarlata, Cecilia Salguero, Will Mavronicolas, and JP Quicquaro, with Ross M. Dinerstein and Rebecca Evans producing. Prior to the docufilm’s release, the streamer recently debuted the second installment to Ryan Murphy’s Monster series, which center around the convicted brothers’ story.

Disclaimer: This article contains mentions of murder. Reader discretion is advised.

In March 2022, a woman named Kouri Richins found the dead body of her husband, Eric Richins, in their house in Park City, Utah. Kouri reportedly called 911 and informed the dispatcher about her husband’s death. After authorities arrived at the scene, they sent the body for an autopsy, which revealed that Richins had fentanyl in his system. The police continued their investigation and soon arrested Kouri Richins for poisoning her husband. As of now, no trial date has been set for the case. However, Kouri didn’t receive bail during the bail hearing and is currently in jail.

According to CBS News, Kouri Richins went to sleep with her son because he was having nightmares. However, after she returned to her room, she found Eric Richins’ lifeless body at the foot of their bed. Initially, she told the investigators that she prepared a glass of cocktail for her husband before going to their son’s room. As authorities moved forward with the investigation, they soon apprehended Kouri for her husband’s murder. Citing the court documents, CBS News mentioned that Kouri bought fentanyl from her housekeeper in early 2022. Then, in late February, she asked for more fentanyl.

The autopsy showed that Eric Richins had ingested fentanyl five times the lethal dose. Meanwhile, the court documents revealed that Kouri Richins might have had an extramarital affair with another man, reported Inside Edition. In June 2023, Kouri Richins appeared in court for a bail hearing and was denied bail. Currently, Kouri Richins is in jail in Utah and waiting for the trial to begin.

Where is Kouri Richins now?

As mentioned earlier, Kouri Richins is in jail in Utah after the judge denied her bail in the murder case. During the hearing, one of the experts revealed that the accused made suspicious searches on Google after Eric Richins’ death. CBS News stated that Kouri searched things like “can FBI find deleted messages” and “what is a lethal dose of fentanyl?” However, the defense claimed they were “innocent” searches made after the death. However, the judge decided that she should go back to jail.

Kouri Richins wrote a book titled Are You With Me? after her Eric Richins’ demise. The book chronicles the journey of a young boy who lost his father but feels that he is still around him.

As far as the trial is concerned, no trial date has been set for the murder of Eric Richins.

In March 2022, authorities discovered the dead body of Eric Richins inside their house in Park City, Utah. Reports indicate that his wife, Kouri Richins, initially found the body and dialed 911. After authorities sent Richins’ body for an autopsy, the results revealed that Eric Richins died due to a fentanyl overdose. As the investigations moved forward, police arrested Richins’ wife for the killing and charged her with the slaying. Although the trial of Kouri Richins hasn’t begun, court documents reveal that she was having an extramarital affair with a man.

Citing the autopsy report, ABC 4 News reported that Eric Richins had ingested fentanyl orally. Additionally, the amount of fentanyl found in his system was five times the lethal dose. A year later, police apprehended Kouri Richins and charged her with aggravated murder. The outlet stated that the authorities additionally charged with criminal homicide and three counts of possession of drugs with intent to distribute. Kouri Richins denied all the charges against her and maintained her innocence. However, the court documents revealed that Kouri sent messages to a man and texted her alleged boyfriend on the night of her husband’s death.

Meanwhile, according to CBS News, after Kouri Richins found her husband dead and called 911, she reportedly recounted the events to the dispatcher. In the initial rounds of questioning, Kouri told investigators that she made a glass of cocktail for Richins before helping their son to sleep since he was having nightmares. However, when she returned to their bedroom, she found the lifeless body of her husband and contacted the authorities.

Inside Edition reported that Kouri Richins allegedly had an affair and continuously texted him. Citing the court documents, the publication stated that Kouri kept on sending text messages to her alleged lover in the weeks leading up to her husband’s death. One of the messages stated, “I just want to lay on the couch and cuddle you. Watch a murder documentary and snuggle.” She also messaged “Love you” to the same person on the night of her husband’s death.

During the bail hearing, prosecutors presented evidence against Kouri Richins to put her on trial. CBS News reported that several experts testified during the hearing and noted how Kouri might have been responsible for her husband’s death. One of the experts pointed out the Google searches Kouri made after Eric’s death, which included things such as “can FBI find deleted messages” and “what is a lethal dose of fentanyl?” However, the defense claimed that she searched the queries above after Richins’ death and called them “innocent questions.” After hearing several testimonies, the judge denied her bail and sent her to jail.

In August 2024, the court finally revealed that Kouri Richins, who published a children’s book about grief after her husband’s death, will stand trial. Per CBS News, the judge noted that the prosecutors have enough evidence against the accused. Hence, Kouri will be going on trial for the murder of Eric Richins. However, there has been no change in Kouri’s stance since she maintains that she is innocent. She pleaded not guilty to all the charges against her.

As of now, the date for Kori Richins’ trial has not been set, but her attorneys believe that the murder trial might start in 2025.

Disclaimer: The article contains mentions of murder. Reader discretion is advised.

In June 2024, the court found Wade Wilson guilty of murdering two women in October 2019. Reports suggest that he confessed to the killings during a call with his father. After authorities charged him with multiple charges, including first-degree murder, the Deadpool namesake went to trial for the killings and was found guilty. At the time of the verdict, the jury recommended and ruled in the favor of death sentence. Almost two months after the verdict, the court sentenced him to death for the gruesome murders that took place in October 2019.

According to the New York Post, the judge gave Wade Wilson a death sentence after hearing the facts about the brutal murders. While delivering the death sentence, the judge noted that the evidence presented to him in the case was so cruel that he couldn’t overrule the jury’s recommendation. The judge said, “The evidence shows the murders were heinous, atrocious and cruel. and that the second murder was cold, calculated, and premeditated.” He received two death sentences, one for each murder. Before the verdict, Wilson was residing at Lee County Jail in Fort Myers, Florida.

During the trial, Wade Wilson’s father testified in court and recalled what his son said about the slayings. Initially, Wilson’s father didn’t believe what he said on the case and called him a “good storyteller.” However, he eventually got to know the truth about the crimes. Per News-Press, the Deadpool namesake choked one of the women in her sleep while he strangled the second victim. He then drove over his second victim after realizing she didn’t die. Additionally, the outlet reported that Wilson ran over her 10-20 times.

With this sentencing, Wade Wilson becomes the 277th man to receive the death penalty for his crimes. He will be relocated to another location where other 276 men are on death row.

Where will convicted killer Wade Wilson serve his death sentence?

As mentioned earlier, Wade Wilson received a death sentence for the brutal slaying of two men in October 2019. According to another report by News-Press, Wilson will now join other 276 men on death at Union Correctional Institution in Raiford, Florida.

During the trial, much information was presented in front of the jury. News-Press reported that Wade Wilson met one of his victims at a bar and arrived at her home the next morning. A few hours later, Wilson killed the victim by strangling her in her sleep and took her car.

The publication stated that the killer met another woman on the street and asked her for directions. He lured her into the car and strangled her when she tried to leave the vehicle. Subsequently, he pushed her out of the vehicle and ran over her multiple times. During the trial, Wilson’s father noted how he told him about the murders during a telephone call.

Per the father’s testimony, Wade Wilson murdered both women on the same day. His father also revealed that Wilson killed one of the victims by choking her in her sleep. On the other hand, Wilson pushed the other victims out of the car when she tried to escape. However, when he realized that the victim was still breathing, he ran over.

“He was wanting me to feel the same way he was feeling,” Wilson’s father testified. Additionally, he told the court that they had several conversations about the crimes. However, in one instance, Wilson’s mother heard all the information and told it to the authorities.

Police then arrested Wade Wilson for the two murders. The case went to trial, and the jury found him guilty on six charges, including two counts of first-degree murder.

The Central Park Jogger Case became a worldwide phenomenon and forced the New York authorities to solve the case as soon as possible. In April 1989, an unknown assailant raped Trisha Meili after brutally beating her in New York City’s Central Park. Authorities discovered her body and sent her to the hospital for treatment. The victim suffered severe injuries and the doctors believed that she might not make it.

Meanwhile, the police started investigating the case and arrested five Black and Hispanic boys. The five teens—Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, Korey Wise, and Antron McCray—went to trial and were found guilty. However, in 2002, everything changed after a convicted criminal named Matias Reyes came forward and admitted to raping Meili.

According to ABC News, Trisha Meili went for a jog after reaching home from the office. When police responded to calls of several young men harassing the public inside the park, Meili continued to run until two people later found her body in the wooded area in Central Park. Authorities subsequently arrested five people in connection with the assaults that took place in the park. Later, Richardson, Salaam, Santana, Wise, and McCray became suspects in the Central Park rape case.

Initially, four out of the five accused made open confessions about Trisha Meili’s attack. However, they recanted their statements and noted that the police coerced them into giving false statements, reported BBC News. Although prosecutors didn’t find any DNA evidence against the five teenagers, they took them to trial by relying on their initial confessions. The trial continued for six weeks and the jury deliberated for 10 days before delivering a guilty verdict. However, in 2002, a criminal named Matias Reyes admitted to raping Trisha Meili. After his confession, the judge vacated the sentence of the Central Park Five.

Per New York’s Department of Corrections, Reyes is currently serving his sentence in prison in Wallkill, New York.

Central Park Five: Where is Trisha Meili’s real attacker Matias Reyes now?

As mentioned above, convicted criminal Matias Reyes admitted that he raped and beat Trisha Meili in New York City’s Central Park in April 1989. Newsweek mentioned that he acted alone during the heinous crime. The outlet stated that Reyes was 17 years old and worked at a convenience store while living in a van on the street. Reyes was already serving in prison when he confessed to the attack on Meili. Authorities reportedly apprehended Reyes for raping another woman. Upon his arrest, he admitted to raping several women and killing one and received a life sentence.

According to the New York’s Department of Corrections, Matias Reyes is currently serving his sentence at the Shawangunk Correctional Facility in Wallkill, New York. However, he never got convicted for the rape of Trisha Meili. Newsweek mentioned that the statute of limitations had expired when he confessed to the crimes.

How was Matias Reyes caught?

Per ABC News, Matias Reyes met Korey Wise while serving their sentences at New York’s Rikers Island Jail. In 2002, Reyes contacted the police and told them everything about what he did to Trisha Meili. Authorities took his DNA and analyzed it. Shockingly, the DNA of Reyes matched the DNA found at the crime scene in Central Park, and the court vacated the convictions of Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, Korey Wise, and Antron McCray. At the time, Wise was the only one who was still serving his sentence.

Now, the Central Park Five are known as the Exonerated Five. Richardson, Salaam, Wise, and Santana recently made an appearance at the Democratic National Convention. They extended their support to Vice President Kamala Harris, who is now running for the post of the President of the United States of America.

On April 19, 1989, authorities discovered a barely alive Trisha Meili in a wooded area of New York’s Central Park. Reports indicate that the culprit raped her and beat her while she was jogging in the park. After she was taken to the hospital for treatment, police started their investigation and arrested five Black and Hispanic teenagers for allegedly committing the crime. While doctors tried to revive Meili, law enforcement agencies reportedly coerced the accused into giving false confessions. Even without strong evidence, police charged them and took them to trial.

According to ABC News, Trisha Meili suffered severe injuries because of the attack and had no memory of what happened. The publication mentioned that Meili had “blunt trauma,” and the doctors felt that she might not survive. One of the medical professionals noted that Meili’s body was swollen. Additionally, she had several skull fractures. The injuries were so severe that one of the doctors told Meili’s family that it would be better if she died, per Cleveland.com. Simultaneously, police interrogated the five teens—Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, Korey Wise, and Antron McCray—and got a confession from four of them.

Although the prosecutors had no DNA evidence against the five accused, they relied on the initial confessions to take them to trial. ABC News reported that Trisha Meili remained in a coma for over a week before she gained consciousness. Moreover, she testified during the trial but didn’t discuss the incident because she had no memory of it. After hearing from the witnesses and arguments, the jury deliberated for 10 days and found Salaam, Santana, and McCray guilty of raping Meili. In addition, the jury found them guilty on the charges of assault and robbery. Meanwhile, they found Wise and Richardson guilty as well.

Although her current whereabouts are unknown, a 2002 interview with Oprah Winfrey revealed that she relocated to Connecticut.

The Central Park Five: What is Trisha Meili doing now?

An interview with Oprah Winfrey revealed that Trisha Meili lived in Connecticut in 2002 and got married. On the other hand, Meili wrote a book about the entire Central Park case. Titled I Am the Central Park Jogger: A Story of Hope and Possibility, the book talks about how Meili lived her life after the Central Park incident. The book went on to receive universal acclaim and earned positive reviews from outlets such as The New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Orlando Sentinel, and more.

Trisha Meili became an advocate trainer for the Sexual Assault and Violent Intervention Program (SAVI) at the Mount Senai Hospital. According to the Speaker Exchange Agency, Meili joined the Board of Directors of Gaylord Hospital as an Honorary Officer. Over the years, she received several awards, including the National Courage Award from the Courage Center. Moreover, she received the Pacesetter Award from New York Hospital Queens and the Spirit of Achievement Award from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She was also an Olympic torchbearer in New York City.

In 2002, the case took a turn when the court vacated the convictions of the Central Park Five. ABC News reported that a man named Matias Reyes came forward and confessed that he raped Trisha Meili. Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, and Antron McCray were already out of prison at the time. Korey Wise was the only one still serving his sentence, and he was released early. Although Reyes admitted that he committed the crime alone, Meili believed more than one person sexually assaulted her.

According to ABC News, the Ohio 5th District Court of Appeals overturned Anthony Harris’ conviction on June 7, 2000. The appeals court determined that detectives had coerced Harris into confessing to Devan Duniver’s murder to secure a conviction. The following day, Harris walked out of the detention center a free man after spending about two years there.

While speaking in ABC 20/20’s “Gone Before the Storm,” Anthony Harris discussed in detail how an investigator pressured him into confessing in 1998. On June 27 of that year, five-year-old Devan Duniver went missing from her New Philadelphia, Ohio, apartment complex. The disappearance prompted a search for the girl whose body was discovered the following day. She died of multiple stab wounds to the neck.

Anthony Harris revealed that a police chief from a nearby town shortly after the discovery of Devan Duniver’s remains in a stationhouse. The officer repeatedly asked Harris if he killed Duniver, which he initially denied. Recalling the intense interrogation, the exoneree said, “The investigator, he had basically told me that, ‘If you confess to this murder you can go home.’ It’s like, ‘Okay. Well, I’m over here scared, so I want to go home.”

Detectives focused on Anthony Harris as a suspect despite having multiple other potential leads, reported People Magazine. Harris’ 1999 trial ended in a conviction when Juvenile and Probate Court Judge Linda Kate found him guilty of the murder.

Sadly, Devan Duniver’s killer was never brought to justice. However, Anthony Harris claims he has not given up hope just yet. He said, “We’re going to figure this out [and] give her some kind of closure.”

ABC 20/20‘s “Gone Before the Storm” chronicles Devan Duniver’s 1998 murder and the wrongful conviction of accused killer Anthony Harris. The upcoming episode will air on the network this Friday, August 23, 2024, at 9 p.m. ET. Now-grown Harris speaks to 20/20 for the first time since his exoneration “for a crime he didn’t commit.” Meanwhile, “her killer is still wanted,” reads an official synopsis.

For our 'Gone Before The Storm' episode, Ohio residents recalled the search for Devan Duniver, who disappeared from her family's apartment in 1998.
Five-year-old Devan Duniver went missing from a New Philadelphia, Ohio, apartment complex on June 27, 1998. Devan left her apartment to play outside and never returned. Her mother informed the authorities, prompting a widespread search with the aid of the neighborhood residents. The search concluded with the discovery of Devan’s body in the nearby woods the following day. She died of multiple stab wounds to the neck, per ABC News.

During Devan Duniver’s murder investigation, detectives focused on her neighbor, 12-year-old Anthony Harris. They failed to pursue other leads despite having multiple other potential suspects and coerced the boy into falsely confessing to Devan’s murder. He revealed in ABC 20/20’s “Gone Before the Storm” how the investigator “basically told me that, ‘If you confess to this murder you can go home.'”

The case ended in Anthony Harris’ conviction in 1999. However, after two years in juvenile detention, he successfully appealed his conviction. Then, in June 2000, an appeals court overturned his conviction.

Detectives have never successfully solved Devan Duniver’s decades-old murder case. According to People Magazine, despite having multiple potential suspects, they initially focused on Anthony Harris. Investigators alleged that Harris, then 12, gave inconsistent details about his whereabouts when Devan disappeared on June 27, 1998. The five-year-old girl’s body was found the next day in the woods.

After the discovery of Devan Duniver’s remains, authorities called Anthony Harris to the stationhouse. There, Thomas Vaughn, Millersburg police chief, interrogated Harris and coerced the boy into confessing to the murder. Harris would later reveal how the pressure of Vaughn repeatedly asking him if he killed Devan got to him.

Recalling the hostile interrogation, Anthony Harris told ABC 20/20, “The investigator, he had basically told me that, ‘If you confess to this murder you can go home.’ It’s like, ‘Okay. Well, I’m over here scared, so I want to go home.” Harris then confessed to Devan Duniver’s murder, a crime he did not commit, and faced charges.

In 1999, Anthony Harris, then 13, stood trial in a juvenile proceeding. A Juvenile and Probate Court Judge, Linda Kate, found him guilty. Kate eventually handed him a maximum sentence to serve in juvenile detention until he was 21. A year later, Harris successfully appealed his conviction. The Ohio 5th District Court of Appeals would then overturn his conviction in June 2000. The court believed the investigator had coerced him into confessing to the murder.

Subsequent lawsuits stated detectives failed to pursue other potential leads in Devan Duniver’s murder case. Per these claims, possible suspects included Devan’s mother, Lori Duniver, who had allegedly considered a murder-suicide with her children. The five-year-old victim’s biological father was also among them for allegedly disputing with the mother. Additionally, he had a history of domestic violence.

Among the potential suspects was Lori Duniver’s boyfriend, who had allegedly kidnapped Devan on one occasion. Furthermore, neighbors had claimed the victim’s brother was violent and had allegedly stabbed a cat once. Perhaps the most incriminating instance was when search dogs had led authorities to the home of a recently released convicted child molester.

In 2005, a special prosecutor named Richard Dobbins started looking into Devan Duniver’s murder case. But, two years after starting the investigation, Dobbins ruled that there was insufficient evidence to prosecute. Ohio’s Tuscarawas County district attorney, Ryan Styer, had the case filed in 2022. After a review of the special prosecutor’s findings, Styer told 20/20 that they “invested a lot of time conducting many interviews of witnesses and known persons of interest.” He also believes there is not enough evidence to prosecute the case.

Anthony Harris gave his first interview since his exoneration on ABC 20/20’s “Gone Before the Storm.” Harris stated that he hasn’t given up hope on finding Devan Duniver’s killer. He said, “We’re going to figure this out [and] give her some kind of closure.”

Disclaimer: The article contains mentions of murder. Reader discretion is advised.

In July 2016, authorities discovered the lifeless body of former US marine Nick Morelos at his residence in Tucson, Arizona. Reports indicate that Morelos’ fiancée initially found the body and called 911. As authorities arrived at the scene, they found several clues in and out of the house. After extensive investigations, police arrested James Lapan. for the slaying and took him to trial on the first-degree murder charge. The murder trial ended with the jury finding Lapan guilty of the slaying, and he was sentenced to life in prison. Dateline NBC will explore Nick Morelos’ murder case in its latest episode on Friday, August 23, at 10 p.m. ET.

Oxygen stated that authorities found Nick Morelos’ naked body inside his bedroom. The culprit reportedly shot the victim eight times. Moreover, one of the bullets went straight into his forehead. After police began investigating the crime scene, they found blood inside and outside the house, including his closet. Meanwhile, a large portion of Morelos’ rug was found to be missing. As the investigation progressed, police received a tip about a man named James Lapan, who didn’t have a good relationship with Morelos. In one instance, Lapan told HR to handle Morelos’ attitude or else he would. Subsequently, authorities interrogated Lapan in Morelos’ murder case.

During the questioning, Lapan told them that he was home when the murder took place. His wife confirmed his presence in the house. However, after police received a tip from one of Lapan’s friends, they searched Lapan’s house. Oxygen reported that authorities found several boxes of .45 caliber bullets, along with two shell casings similar to the casing found at the crime scene, during the search. They then took Lapan into custody and charged him with first-degree murder.

The case went to trial, and the jury found James Lapan guilty of the murder of Nick Morelos. Currently, Lapan is serving his life sentence at ASP Red Rock Correctional Center in Eloy, Arizona.

Apart from finding bullets and shell casings, police also discovered pants that allegedly had blood stains on them. Soon after, Lapan’s wife contacted the authorities and told them that she lied to the investigators. Oxygen stated that she initially told the police that her husband was in the house when the crime took place. However, she told the prosecutors that her husband left the house and spent the night outside. Moreover, she stated that her husband returned the next morning while she was in the shower.

Lapan’s wife also shared that his hands were covered in blood. According to Oxygen, she stated, “When he had come in, his arm was bloody and he just looked at me and said, ‘I was home all night and we worked out this morning.” She noted that she lied to the police because of Lapan’s controlling and abusive behavior.

Afterward, the forensics team found the blood inside Nick Moleros’ bedroom was of James Lapan. During the trial, prosecutors claimed that Lapan planned everything and killed Morelos. Citing the prosecution’s statement, KVOA News noted, “James Lapan snuck into Nick’s backyard, he climbed up onto the roof of Nick’s porch. He ambushed Nick in his bedroom. This is planning folks, planning to go over and kill Nick.”

After hearing the arguments, the jury went into deliberations and came out with a guilty verdict, per KGUN 9. As a result, the court sentenced James Lapan to life in prison. According to official records, he is currently held at ASP Red Rock Correctional Center in Eloy, Arizona.

Dateline NBC will re-examine the brutal murder of former marine Nick Morelos that took place in July 2016. The episode “Stone-Cold” will reveal startling details about the crime and feature detailed interviews with people affected by the gruesome crime. Additionally, it would shed light on how investigators solved the case and caught James Lapan for the slaying. Dateline NBC will air the episode on Friday, August 23, at 10 p.m. ET.

According to Newsweek, Nick Morelos’ fiancée discovered the dead body of the former marine inside his residence in Tucson, Arizona. She found Morelos’ body after becoming concerned that the victim didn’t wish her good morning via text message, so she went to his home to check on him and discovered his lifeless body. Per Oxygen, Morelos’ body was covered with bullet holes. When authorities arrived at the scene, investigators noted that the unknown assailant shot Morelos eight times, and one of the bullets hit the middle of the forehead.

However, officials found some crucial evidence at the crime scene that helped them in catching the killer. Oxygen reported that the investigators found blood in several areas of Nick Morelos’ house, including his closet, broken window glass, and the stucco on the outside of his home. They also discovered that a large portion of Morelos’ rug was missing. After extensive investigation, police apprehended a man named James Lapan. on July 22, 2016, and took him into custody. KOLD News 13 reported that authorities charged him with first-degree murder.

Who killed Nick Morelos & why?

As mentioned above, authorities arrested James Lapan for the killing of Nick Morelos and charged him with first-degree murder. Meanwhile, a conversation between the victim’s brother and the HR of Morelos’ workplace gave authorities an important breakthrough.

Oxygen stated that Morelos and Lapan had a strained relationship at work. Lapan talked to HR and raised concerns about Morelos’ attitude. According to HR, Lapan threatened him to handle the situation, or else he had his ways of doing that. Moreover, Lapan was dating one of Morelos’ ex-girlfriends. During the initial round of interrogation, he told the investigators that he was home when Morelos was killed. His wife confirmed that Lapan was sleeping in the house at the time of the killing.

However, the investigators received a tip from one of James Lapan’s friends, which prompted them to obtain a search warrant. They searched Lapan’s house and found two spent shell casings that matched with the casings found inside Nick Morelos’ residence. Additionally, investigators discovered pants that allegedly had blood stains on them. Authorities also searched Lapan’s vehicle and found the carpet fiber that was similar to the rug taken from Morelos’ house. Police then arrested Lapan for the murder and took him to trial, per Oxygen.

During the trial, prosecutors noted that the investigators found Nick Morelos “naked” and “helpless” in his bedroom and “riddled” with bullets, reported KVOA News. Moreover, the prosecution team laid out how James Lapan murdered Morelos. They noted, “James Lapan snuck into Nick’s backyard, he climbed up onto the roof of Nick’s porch. He ambushed Nick in his bedroom. This is planning folks, planning to go over and kill Nick.” The prosecution also talked about the DNA evidence found at the crime scene and how investigators found Lapan’s blood inside Morelos’ bedroom.

On the other hand, the defense claimed that there is ample doubt on how James Lapan’s DNA reached Nick Morelos’ house. After hearing several arguments, the jury started deliberations and came forward with a guilty verdict. Per KGUN 9, the court sentenced him to life in prison. He also received an additional 10.5 years on the charges of burglary.

Dateline NBC will explore the case in its latest episode on Friday, August 23, at 10 p.m. ET.

In 2014, Theranos’ founder, Elizabeth Holmes, was listed among the Forbes list of USA’s richest self-made women. With a net worth of $4.5 billion, she and her organization became a new sensation. However, her empire came crashing down when a federal jury indicted Holmes and her ex-boyfriend, Sunny Balwani, for committing financial fraud. After Holmes stepped down as the CEO of Theranos, she went to trial. Subsequently, the court found her guilty and sentenced her to 11 years in prison. Meanwhile, Balwani received approximately 13 years in prison on wire fraud charges.

According to CNN, several reports suggested that Theranos used the normal technique for taking a blood test with traditional vials and not a few drops taken by a finger prick. Meanwhile, in January 2016, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) criticized the organization after its lab in California failed to meet federal standards. In its letter to the company, the federal agency gave them 10 days to address the issue.

Two months later, the CMS noted that it would ban Elizabeth Holmes and Sunny Balwani if they couldn’t fix the issues in their lab. Then, in May 2016, Balwani allegedly took retirement and left the company.

The problems kept on mounting for Elizabeth Holmes and Sunny Balwani as the US Security and Exchange Commission charged the duo with fraud. Per CNN, the duo extracted over $700 million from the investors by making false claims. Additionally, the publication stated that Holmes and Balwani exaggerated the company’s performance. In June 2018, a federal jury indicted them for engaging in separate schemes to defraud investors, doctors, and patients.

As mentioned earlier, Elizabeth Holmes and Sunny Balwani were indicated after the SEC charged them with massive fraud. The Wall Street Journal reported that the court initially indicted them on two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and nine counts of wire fraud. However, the wire fraud charges later rose to 10. After a lot of delays, the trial of Holmes began in August 2021 and continued for more than five months. Eventually, in January 2022, the jury found her guilty of four charges and sentenced to 11 years in prison.

On the other hand, Sunny Balwani’s trial started in March 2022 and continued for over three months. The trial concluded in July 2022 after the jury delivered a guilty verdict. According to the Department of Justice, the court sentenced him to 12 years and 11 months in prison. In April 2023, KTVU reported that Balwani was serving his sentence at FCI Terminal Island in San Pedro, California. Meanwhile, Holmes is currently residing at a Women’s Federal Prison in Texas, per The Guardian.

Scott Peterson was on San Quentin State Prison’s death row before the California Supreme Court overturned his death sentence in 2020. Scott had been serving time in the facility for the murders of his pregnant wife, Laci Peterson, and their unborn son, Conner, since March 2005. The sentence came after the sensational murder trial ended with his conviction on two counts of murder the previous November. However, he has always maintained innocence in the murders, with the LA Innocence Project now investigating his “claim of actual innocence.”

The highly debated case has garnered widespread attention in the past two decades. It’s no secret that many people believe in Scott Peterson’s innocence, including the unwavering support of some of his family members. A San Quentin prison spokesperson revealed that Scott’s life there involved letters of support and frequent visits from family and friends. Since the California Supreme Court overturned his death sentence, the convicted murderer was moved to a different facility.

According to the California Department of Corrections, Scott Peterson is now in the Mule Creek State Prison. He recently gave his first interview in 20 years in Peacock’s Face to Face with Scott Peterson documentary. Viewers will hear from Scott for the first time since his conviction in the three-part docuseries.

Vernell Crittendon, a San Quentin State Prison spokesperson, described Scott Peterson’s life there to People Magazine. Crittendon claimed Scott adapted to the system with little effort by charming the female prison guards. The inmate even notified others about his nickname “Scottie-Too-Hottie,” which he got through a woman who sent him a letter of support.

According to Crittendon, Scott Peterson received at least 85 such letters every week when he first arrived at the facility. Moreover, the spokesperson called Scott “a sociopath,” adding, “As long as he’s getting all this attention, he’s going to be rather happy.”

The outlet also discussed investigative journalist Nancy Mullane’s encounter with Scott Peterson in San Quentin prison. Mullane had observed Scott while working on her 2012 book Life After Murder: Five Men in Search of Redemption. She claimed that “he looked healthy.”

Mullane described Scott as someone who “didn’t look depressed.” She added, “He looked like someone you’d see on the street playing basketball. He had his shirt off and his boxer shorts up. … He wasn’t ripped, but he looked healthy.”

San Quentin State Prison’s Vernell Crittendon also briefly mentioned Scott Peterson’s frequent visitors. These visitors included some of his parents, a few friends, and a woman from his former defense counsel.

A Peterson family friend had previously told People Magazine in 2005 how “Scott [Peterson]’s keeping his spirits pretty high.” The individual said that despite his conviction, Scott “has the attitude that he didn’t do anything wrong.” They noted, “He’s waiting for the day when he can come out and do his ha-ha dance and tell the world, ‘See, I didn’t do it.'”

The California Department of Corrections had Scott Peterson transferred to the Mule Creek State Prison in October 2022. The move came after he received life in prison without the possibility of parole during a resentencing trial.

Scott now continues his fight for justice, maintaining he did not murder his eight-month-pregnant wife, Laci Peterson, in 2002. He believes new DNA evidence can link a nearby break-in and the burglars to the murder. In May 2024, a judge ordered DNA testing on a piece of duct tape found on Laci’s pants.

People Magazine Investigates: Crimes Of The 2010s chronicles the alleged serial killer Itzcoatl Ocampo’s crimes, who has been accused of murdering the homeless in California. The upcoming episode titled “2012: The So-Cal Killer” will air on ID this Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET.

A synopsis reads, “At the start of 2012, southern California has been under siege for two years by a serial killer targeting the homeless; however, when police accuse one man of the murder of his mother and brother, he discovers all the murders are connected.”

Itzcoatl Ocampo, a former US marine who served in Iraq, was facing charges in the murders of four homeless men. Other charges of Ocampo also included the stabbing deaths of his high school friend’s mother and brother, reported Reuters. The suspected serial killer’s crimes began in December 2011 until his arrest the following January.

Itzcoatl Ocampo: What did the accused homeless serial killer do?

Itzcoatl Ocampo, who is now deceased, was a suspect in six murders that occurred in California’s Orange County. He allegedly murdered six homeless men starting on December 20, 2011. Prosecutors called these six murders a serial “thrill-kill” spree, which concluded after his arrest on January 13, 2013, per CBS News.

The outlet stated that Itzcoatl Ocampo allegedly murdered his first victim, 53-year-old James Patrick McGillivray, on December 20. The second victim was 42-year-old Lloyd Middaugh, who died a week later near a Santa Ana riverbed trail in Anaheim. Then, 57-year-old Paulus Smit was the third victim whose murder occurred two days later outside a Yorba Linda library.

Authorities arrested Itzcoatl Ocampo on January 13, right after he allegedly stabbed 64-year-old John Berry. The stabbing happened outside Anaheim’s Carl’s Jr. restaurant, with multiple witnesses around. The bystanders chased Ocampo after calling the police, who apprehended him in a mobile home park in Yorba Linda, stated NBC Los Angeles.

Itzcoatl Ocampo was a suspect in two additional murders that took place months before his alleged homeless men murder spree began. In October 2011, he murdered the mother and brother of his childhood friend. The victims were 53-year-old Raquel Estrada and 34-year-old Juan Herrera.

What happened to Itzcoatl Ocampo?

Reportedly, before arresting Itzcoatl Ocampo, police had caught Eder Herrera, a homeless man, in connection with the murders. However, they released Herrera, who was suspected serial killer Ocampo’s friend, after the latter’s DNA linked him to the crimes. Prosecutors charged the Iraq veteran with six counts of murder, to which he pleaded not guilty.

Itzcoatl Ocampo’s family claimed he had been disturbed after returning home following his discharge from the military in 2010. Ocampo’s father, Refugio Ocampo, told the Associated Press that he had expressed disillusionment and was facing troubles settling into civilian life. Refugio claimed his son had lost his house and was struggling with his family.

Refugio Ocampo added that he wanted Itzcoatl Ocampo to receive the proper psychological treatment. He and one of their neighbors, who is a Vietnam war veteran, had been pushing the accused for treatment. The father said his son had “started talking about stuff that didn’t make any sense, that the end of the world was going to happen.”

Elsewhere, prosecutors alleged Itzcoatl Ocampo targeted the homeless as they were easy prey. The Guardian stated that they claimed Ocampo felt as though the homeless were a disease in the community. Along with the murder charges, he was also facing more counts, including special allegations of multiple murders, lying in wait, and use of a deadly weapon.

However, Itzcoatl Ocampo died by suicide in later 2013 while awaiting trial. Per NBC Los Angeles, officials found him sick, shaking and vomiting, in his jail cell and rushed him to a Santa Ana hospital, where he died. Ocampo, who was mentally ill, reportedly consumed a fatal dose of Ajax industrial cleanser that he collected while in custody.

Disclaimer: The article contains mentions of murder and abuse. Reader discretion is advised.

After the massive success of DAHMER, Netflix announced the second season of the anthology series MONSTERS, with Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan returning as executive producers. The upcoming edition will primarily focus on Erik and Lyle Menendez, who murdered their parents in 1989. Reports indicate that the Menendez brothers killed their parents and told the dispatcher that an unknown assailant killed them. The series will also look at how the culprits went to trial and recalled the history of abuse they endured throughout their childhood.

According to CBS News, the crime took place on August 20, 1989, when someone shot Jose and Kitty Menendez inside their Beverly Hills residence. The outlet mentioned that Lyle Menendez called 911 to report that someone killed his parents. Subsequently, authorities arrived at the crime scene and questioned the Menendez brothers.

Per the investigators, Lyle and Erik Menendez revealed that they were out of the house when the killings took place. Moreover, they discovered the parents’ dead bodies when they arrived home. During the initial investigation, police believed that Jose might have been killed because of business. However, they soon started suspecting that the brothers might be responsible for their parents’ deaths.

CBS News reported that Erik and Lyle Menendez started behaving erratically after the parents’ death, spending money on expensive things. The duo even bought Rolex watches and invested in businesses. Almost six months after the slayings, investigators received a tip from Erik and Lyle’s therapist, who revealed that the brothers confessed to the murders. Moreover, the psychologist said that she had an audio recording of that confession. After police arrested the Menendez brothers, they went on trial, where the defense alleged that they killed their parents in self-defense.

Why did brothers Lyle & Erik Menendez kill their parents?

As mentioned above, the attorneys of Erik and Lyle Menendez claimed that they murdered their parents in self-defense. Moreover, the duo stated that they endured abuse at the hands of their father throughout their lives. During his testimony, Lyle Menendez revealed that his parents had sexually abused him. He claimed that his father began doing inappropriate things when he was just six.

According to CBS News, Lyle said in court, “He would, uh, fondle me and he would ask me to do the same with him. He’d rape me.” He also clarified that his father stopped abusing him when he turned eight, but he didn’t stop mistreating his brother. When Erik Menendez took the stand, he claimed that the abuse never stopped for him and continued till he turned 18. He recalled that he told Lyle about the abuse and thought he might get help from his brother.

Meanwhile, Lyle told the court that the moment they confronted their father about the abuse, the duo realized that their mother also knew about the abuse. Lyle threatened his parents and told them that they would tell everyone in the family about the abuse. However, the Menendez brothers believed that their father would kill them and decided to take the drastic step. They took the shotguns and shot their parents.

To corroborate their claims, several of their relatives took the stand and talked about certain conversations they had with Erik and Lyle. However, the prosecution noted that even if the brothers were abused, it didn’t give them the right to murder their parents. They also claimed that the Menendez brothers might be making up things to get a lighter punishment.

After listening to several testimonies, the jury deliberated for weeks but couldn’t reach a verdict. Correspondingly, the judge declared it a mistrial, reported CBS News. In October 1995, the second trial began, and the jury found them guilty of first-degree murder. As a result, the court gave them life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

The upcoming Netflix series will dive deeper into the case and reveal startling details. The series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story stars Javier Bardem and Chloe Sevigny as Jose and Kitty Menendez. On the other hand, Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch will be seen as Lyle and Erik Menendez, respectively. It will premiere on Netflix on Thursday, December 19, 2024.

On July 16, 2016, authorities discovered the lifeless body of Frank “Buddy” McCutcheon inside his residence in North Carolina. Reports indicate that his wife, Brenda McCutcheon, called 911 and told the dispatcher about her husband’s death.

Subsequently, police arrived and found that Frank suffered a gunshot wound to the head. The investigation continued and authorities arrested Brenda for the murder of her husband. Dateline NBC will explore the case in its latest episode, which will air on the network on Friday, August 16, at 9 p.m. EST.

According to Citizen Times, Brenda McCutcheon called 911 and told the dispatcher that an unknown person had broken into the house and shot her husband. Police searched their house and discovered a handgun lying on the ground between McCutcheon’s house and the neighboring property. During the initial questions, Brenda denied her involvement in the case. However, one year after the murder, police arrested Brenda and charged her with first-degree murder.

During the trial, the prosecution believed that Brenda killed Frank because of legal issues. As per the prosecutors, the Department of Revenue was investigating Frank for embezzlement and a lot of papers had Brenda’s signature (via Citizen Times).

Additionally, prosecutors noted that they possibly kept employees’ payroll withholdings and did not give them to North Carolina’s Department of Revenue as taxes. Brenda then allegedly tried to correct her mistakes. For the prosecution, this turned out to be the motive. The trial ended with a guilty verdict and the court sentenced her to life in prison for the murder of Frank “Buddy” McCutcheon.

According to North Carolina’s Department of Corrections, Brenda McCutcheon is residing at Anson Correctional Institute in Polkton, North Carolina.

As per the prosecution, Brend McCutcheon shot her husband Frank “Buddy” McCutcheon because he was about to find out about the embezzlement. According to WLOS News, Brenda knew about the investigation regarding embezzlement since mid-July. On the other hand, the publication stated that Brenda contacted a shredding company and told them to shred 40 boxes of content in July 2016.

Meanwhile, the defense claimed the prosecution had no evidence against the client. Moreover, they said the police couldn’t find Brenda’s DNA on the gun obtained from outside the house. After listening to several arguments and witnesses, the jury delivered a guilty verdict in the murder case. As a result, the court gave her life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Dateline NBC is set to re-examine the brutal murder case of Frank “Buddy” McCutcheon that took place in July 2016. The episode, titled “The Day the Music Die,” reveals startling details about the gruesome crime and how an innocent man got killed. It also sheds light on how the authorities investigated the case and caught the killer. The episode will air on the network on Friday, August 16, 2024, at 9 p.m. EST.

On July 16, 2016, authorities discovered the dead body of popular plastic surgeon Frank “Buddy” McCutcheon at his residence in Arden, North Carolina. According to the Citizen-Times, Frank’s wife Brenda McCutcheon called 911 and told the dispatcher about her husband’s death.

During the call, Brenda said someone broke into the house and shot her husband. Subsequently, the police arrived at the scene and found his body in the first-floor TV room of their home. Additionally, investigators stated that Frank suffered a gunshot wound to the head and they found the back door unlocked.

Citizen-Times also reported that investigators found a handgun they suspected was owned by the couple. In the initial round of interrogation, Brenda denied killing her husband.

Who killed Frank ‘Buddy’ McCutcheon?

Authorities continued the investigation and soon discovered that law enforcement agencies investigated Frank “Buddy” McCutcheon for embezzlement. Almost a year after his death, police arrested Brenda McCutcheon for the murder and charged her with first-degree murder (via WXII 12 News). During the trial, the prosecutors claimed that Brenda and Frank had a good relationship. Brenda reportedly gave up her career so that Frank could continue his practice.

However, things went downhill when the Department of Revenue complained against the McCutcheon’s to the criminal department. As per Citizen-Times, the duo held the employees’ payroll withholdings to themselves and didn’t give them to the state’s Department of Revenue.

Assistant District Attorney Meghan Lock said, “The walls were closing in on her, and that’s motive.” On the other hand, the defense tried to prove their client is innocent and stated that Frank “Buddy” McCutcheon had an affair. Additionally, they revealed that Frank withdrew a part of his retirement savings totaling around $300,000.

After hearing several arguments and testimonies, the jury delivered a guilty verdict in the Frank “Buddy” McCutcheon murder case, as per WLOS News. Subsequently, the court sentenced Brenda McCutcheon to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Dateline NBC will explore the aforementioned case in the upcoming episode, airing on Friday, August 16.

Disclaimer: The article contains mentions of murder. Reader discretion is advised.

Netflix’s American Murder: Laci Peterson revealed how authorities apprehended Scott Peterson for the murder of his wife, Laci Peterson. Reports indicate that Laci disappeared from her house on December 24, 2002. Four months later, authorities discovered her body on the shoreline of Point Isabel and arrested Peterson. The case went to trial, and it was revealed that renowned lawyer Mark Geragos would be representing Peterson.

According to KRDO News, Mark Geragos entered the State Bar of California in 1983 and later joined his father’s law firm, Geragos & Geragos. In 1997, Geragos became popular when he represented Susan McDougal. The court convicted McDougal of fraud in the Whitewater case. However, Geragos joined the case and represented her in an embezzlement case in which the court acquitted McDougal. Moreover, he has represented Michael Jackson, rapper Nate Dogg, Gary Condit, Winona Ryder, Colin Kaepernick, and Jussie Smollett throughout his career.

Per the documentary, Mark Geragos became Scott Peterson’s attorney as he made frequent appearances on Larry King LIVE. He even talked about the case on numerous occasions. In one instance, Geragos said that people can condemn Peterson for his character flaws, but that doesn’t make him a murderer. Thus, the Peterson family hired Mark Geragos as Scott Peterson’s attorney in Laci Peterson’s murder trial.

Who is Scott Peterson’s former lawyer, Mark Geragos?

During the trial, Mark Geragos tried to prove that Scott Peterson was not guilty of the murder of Laci Peterson. Initially, he proved the prosecutors wrong by saying Peterson lied about Laci watching TV before her disappearance. He also questioned the credibility of certain police officials investigating the case. Meanwhile, he shared that burglary could be connected with the disappearance. However, Amber Frey‘s testimony changed everything.

Mark Geragos questioned Frey in the court and asked about her affair with Scott Peterson. In the documentary, Frey revealed that Geragos got “agitated” when she didn’t answer his questions as he thought. Even though he tried to picture Scott Peterson as innocent, the jury found him guilty and gave him a death sentence. However, in August 2021, the court overturned the death sentence and gave him life imprisonment.

In January 2024, the LA Innocence Project filed an appeal on behalf of Scott Peterson. Per People Magazine, the organization revealed that “new evidence” shows that the accused is innocent and had nothing to do with the disappearance and murder of his wife, Laci Peterson. After the appeal, attorney Mark Geragos stated that Peterson had a good chance of getting out. Geragos told People Magazine, “I do. I’ve always felt this way. You’re talking to somebody who has been pilloried for the last 20 years for having the temerity to say that I think he’s innocent.”

American Murder: Laci Peterson is available to stream on Netflix.
