The cut joke from Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine that Disney wanted to be removed has been revealed.

In the weeks surrounding Deadpool & Wolverine’s theatrical release, MCU actor Ryan Reynolds confirmed that there was one planned line of dialogue that Disney asked not to include in the movie.

Per Variety, the cut line has now been revealed as the Disney FYC online portal has released the film’s official script, which features the original joke.

What is the cut Mickey Mouse joke Disney didn’t want in Deadpool & Wolverine?

The moment takes place shortly after Wade Wilson learns that Magneto is dead. Wade then turns to the camera and says, “F—k! What, we can’t even afford one more X-Man? Disney is so cheap. I can barely breathe with all this Mickey Mouse c—k in my throat.”

Director Shawn Levy also previously confirmed that Disney asked them to remove a line of dialogue from the film. He told Entertainment Weekly in August 2024, “The general rule is to never punch down and to only take the piss out of people who can take it. Certainly, when it was about Hugh in a meta way, Hugh was always the first to laugh uproariously. There was only one line in the entire movie that we were asked to change. We have made a pact, Ryan and I, to go to our grave with that line, but I will say that it was replaced with an equally dirty line of dialogue about Pinocchio shoving his face up Deadpool’s ass and starting to lie like crazy. I was like, ‘Ryan, that’s your replacement line in response to, ‘Can we clean it up?’ That’s Ryan Reynolds for you, audacious to the very edge.”

Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine, which co-stars Hugh Jackman alongside Reynolds, is now available to stream at home on Disney+.

Assassin’s Creed director Justin Kurzel has an idea for a Mad Max prequel.

There have so far been five films in the Mad Max franchise: 1979’s Mad Max, 1981’s Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, 1985’s Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, and 2024’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. George Miller has directed all five entries; although, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome was also co-directed by George Ogilvie.

Speaking to Collider, Kurzel, who recently helmed a new crime thriller called The Order with Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult, says he has an idea for a Mad Max prequel he’s been “very tempted” to talk to Miller about.

What is Justin Kurzel’s idea for a Mad Max prequel?

“I’ll tell you what, maybe because it was such a big influence, but I’ve always been curious about what happened before the first Mad Max — what was that world with the Nightrider, pre-Mad Max? I’ve always been very curious about that and very tempted to talk to George about the possibility of a world that is pre-Mad Max 1 and what that is,” Kurzel said. “That’s been one that I’ve always been really curious about because it was such an influential film in my time… It’s an amazing franchise, but I’ve always been curious about those moments before that first one because it’s set up so richly. And it’s such a great time in Australia, too, that period.”

Miller has also spoken about wanting to make another Mad Max movie that follows Tom Hardy’s character in the events leading up to Mad Max: Fury Road. There’s been little to no news about this potential project, however, since the release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

Along with The Order and the 2016 Assassin’s Creed movie, Kurzel is known for directing 2015’s Macbeth, 2019’s True History of the Kelly Gang, and 2021’s Nitram.

Dwayne Johnson is opening up about recording his “very challenging” song in Moana 2.

Moana 2 is now playing in United States theaters. Directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ladoux Miller, the sequel sees Johnson return to voice the character of Maui, while Auli’i Cravalho also reprises her vocal role as Moana.

The first Moana movie included a song, “You’re Welcome,” performed by Johnson which quickly became very popular. Johnson also sings another song in Moana 2, called “Can I Get a Chee-Hoo?”

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Johnson discussed why recording “Can I Get a Chee-Hoo?” was a challenging experience.

What did Dwayne Johnson say about Maui’s Moana 2 song?

“Not to get too technical, but [songwriters Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear], they are forces when they write,” he explains. “Abigail and Emily came in with something that was very challenging and I loved it. That was multiple sessions to get that song down because it goes into a lot of different places. Their words, not mine, it’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and all the places that it goes. So it was a challenge, but I loved every second of it.”

Johnson wasn’t, however, taken aback when it came to having to rap for the song.

“I got bars,” he said. “I grew up loving hip-hop music. My love is hip-hop music and traditional country — put them together. That’s how I grew up.”

The synopsis for Moana 2 reads, “Walt Disney Animation Studios’ epic animated musical “Moana 2” reunites Moana (voice of Cravalho) and Maui (voice of Johnson) three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers,” the synopsis reads. “After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”

The United States theatrical release date for Paddington in Peru has been delayed.

Paddington in Peru is the third film in the Paddington franchise following 2014’s Paddington and 2017’s Paddington 2. The film is directed by Dougal Wilson and once again sees Ben Whishaw voice the loveable bear.

While Paddington in Peru has already been released in the United Kingdom, the film was originally supposed to hit United States theaters on January 17, 2025; now, however, the film’s release in the United States is being delayed.

When is the new United States release date for Paddington in Peru?

Per Deadline, Sony has moved StudioCanal’s Paddington in Peru to Valentine’s Day weekend, meaning the film will open in United States theaters on February 14, 2025.

“The news comes in the wake of the Dougal Wilson-directed threequel notching the best UK opening for a British production since 2021’s No Time to Die at a 3-day of £9.65M ($12.4M),” Deadline’s article notes. “That bow also repped the highest-ever for Studiocanal. The 2014 original opened to £5.1M, and the 2017 sequel did £8.2M in its debut. Combined, the previous two films grossed $600M worldwide.”

The synopsis for Paddington in Peru reads, “Full of Paddington’s signature blend of wit, charm, and laugh-out-loud humor, Paddington in Peru finds the beloved, marmalade-loving bear lost in the jungle on an exciting, high-stakes adventure. When Paddington discovers his beloved Aunt Lucy has gone missing from the Home for Retired Bears, he and the Brown family head to the wilds of Peru to look for her, the only clue to her whereabouts a spot marked on an enigmatic map. Determined to solve the mystery, Paddington embarks on a thrilling quest through the rainforests of the Amazon to find his aunt…and may also uncover one of the world’s most legendary treasures.”

The film stars Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer, Madeleine Harris, Samuel Joslin, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Olivia Colman, and Antonio Banderas.

The early box office projection numbers for Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 have been revealed.

Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 both open in United States theaters in December 2024. The former is a prequel to 2019’s The Lion King directed by Barry Jenkins, while the latter is Paramount Pictures’ third entry in the Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise.

How much are Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 expected to make opening weekend?

According to Deadline, Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 are both looking to make about the same amount of money during their opening weekend. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is currently eyeing a $55 million debut, while Mufasa: The Lion King is currently circling $50 million.

The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie, in comparison, made $58 million during its opening weekend and grossed around $320 million in total; although, it’s worth mentioning the film was also released in the United States in February 2020, just one month before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 opened to $72.1 million and grossed around $405.4 million in total.

The 2019 Lion King movie, directed by Jon Favreau, was a giant box office hit, making $191.8 million during its opening weekend. In total, it earned around $1.657 billion worldwide and is now the seventh-highest-grossing movie of all time.

“Note, it doesn’t matter who wins, just another great moment of all boats rising over the Christmas box office after what is expected to be a record Thanksgiving stretch, besting 2018’s $315.6M five-day total. In the end, it’s about that Christmas multiple, which can be as high as 5x-5.5x for family titles opening before the holiday,” Deadline’s article notes.

Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will both be released on December 20, 2024.

Critics are enjoying Michael Fassbender’s performance in The Agency; however, reviews are also split when it comes to other elements of the new Showtime series.

The first two episodes of The Agency will premiere on Paramount+ with Showtime on November 29, 2024. With new episodes continuing to drop on Fridays, the series stars Fassbender as a character named Martin, while the cast also includes Jodie Turner-Smith, Jeffrey Wright, Richard Gere, and more.

What are critics saying about The Agency?

The first reviews of The Agency have now been released and, while most critics agree that Fassbender and the rest of the supporting cast are quite good in the series, there are differing opinions on the writing, tone, and pace.

The Hollywood Reporter’s Daniel Fienberg wrote, “Directed in its initial installments by Joe Wright, the series looks terrific and sometimes builds suspense. What it doesn’t have, at least in early episodes, is much consistency. Each of the three chapters sent to critics has a different set of attributes and different points of frustration, which in turn add up to an overall frustration. It’s completely possible that these elements could come together fluidly by the end of the first season, or that what feels like disjointedness could turn out to be versatility. For now, however, it’s hard to latch onto the show despite its potential.”

TheWrap’s Zaki Hasan said that, despite the fact that The Agency should land in “must-watch territory,” it’s “weighed down by a sluggish narrative that struggles to match the undeniable visual flair.”

Hasan also pointed out that there are a number of similar shows that have recently popped up — Apple TV+’s Slow Horses, Peacock’s The Day of the Jackal, etc. — and says The Agency “can’t help but suffer in comparison, lacking the ingenuity or depth to stand out in a crowded field of superior dramas.”

Roger Ebert’s Brian Tallerico was more positive toward the show, saying he found the first two episodes “consistently riveting due to the sharp dialogue, incredible ensemble, and tight filmmaking.”

Variety’s Aramide Tinubu further said the initial episodes are “deeply engrossing” and play into exploring “the human cost of covert work.”

Jon Watts has confirmed that Wolfs 2 is dead.

Directed by Watts, Wolfs stars Brad Pitt and George Clooney. The Apple TV+ movie received a very short limited theatrical release before it was put onto streaming a week later. It has since become Apple TV+’s most-viewed film.

A Wolfs sequel was initially planned; however, Watts recently told Collider that he doesn’t think Wolfs 2 will happen anymore.

Speaking with Deadline, Watts revealed that it was his decision not to move forward with Wolfs 2, largely because he has lost faith in Apple TV+.

What did Jon Watts say about Wolfs 2?

Watts said, “I showed Apple my final cut of Wolfs early this year, They were extremely enthusiastic about it and immediately commissioned me to start writing a sequel. But their last minute shift from a promised wide theatrical release to a streaming release was a total surprise and made without any explanation or discussion. I wasn’t even told about it until less than a week before they announced it to the world. I was completely shocked and asked them to please not include the news that I was writing a sequel. They ignored my request and announced it in their press release anyway, seemingly to create a positive spin to their streaming pivot.

“And so I quietly returned the money they gave me for the sequel. I didn’t want to talk about it because I was proud of the film and didn’t want to generate any unnecessary negative press. I loved working with Brad and George (and Amy and Austin and Poorna and Zlatko) and would happily do it again. But the truth is that Apple didn’t cancel the Wolfs sequel, I did, because I no longer trusted them as a creative partner.”

Wolfs is now streaming on Apple TV+.

Ringo Starr has seemingly confirmed that Barry Keoghan will be playing him in Sam Mendes’ Beatles movies.

It was announced in February 2024 that Mendes — known for directing 2012’s Skyfall, 2019’s 1917, and more — was directing four separate movies about The Beatles. Each film will follow one specific band member’s point of view.

There has since been a flurry of online rumors suggesting that actors such as Paul Mescal and Barry Keoghan are being considered to play members of the band.

Speaking with ET Tonight, Starr has now seemingly confirmed that Keoghan will indeed play him in Mendes’ films.

What did Ringo Starr say about Barry Keoghan and Sam Mendes’ Beatle movies?

When asked what he thought about Keoghan potentially playing him in Mendes’ movies, Starr said, “Well, I think he’s great and I believe he’s somewhere taking drum lessons.”

Starr went on to say that he hopes Keoghan isn’t taking “too many” drum lessons as he belives that drummers need to “get their own feel.”

Mendes will direct all four movies. He will also produce them alongside eal Street Productions’ Pippa Harris and Julie Pastor. Apple Corps Ltd.’s Jeff Jones serves as an executive producer. The films will be released through Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Mendes previously said, “I’m honored to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time, and excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies.”

Harris added, “We intend this to be a uniquely thrilling, and epic cinematic experience: four films, told from four different perspectives which tell a single story about the most celebrated band of all time. To have The Beatles’ and Apple Corps’ blessing to do this is an immense privilege. From our first meeting with Tom Rothman and Elizabeth Gabler, it was clear that they shared both our passion and ambition for this project, and we can’t think of a more perfect home than Sony Pictures.”

Now, Cheadle has been tapped to star in a new action movie, Canyon, which is being written by John Wick’s Derek Kolstad.

What do we know about the Canyon movie starring Don Cheadle?

According to Deadline, the film will take “place over the course of one scorching night” and follows Canyon, “a part-time jazz musician, full-time killer,” who “finds himself the unlikely protector of a young siren pulled into a turf war between feuding crime families.”

The movie is being directed by Colin Tilley, who is best known for directing music videos for artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Justin Timberlake, Justin Bieber, and more.

Cheadle and Kolstad also serve as producers alongside Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, Davis Entertainment’s Jon Davis, and Jeremy Stein.

Kolstad worked on the screenplays for the first three movies in the John Wick franchise: 2014’s John Wick, 2017’s John Wick: Chapter 2, and 2019’s John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum. He also wrote the scripts for 2021’s Nobody starring Bob Odenkirk and the forthcoming sequel, Nobody 2, which hits theaters on August 15, 2025.

Additionally, Kolstad has penned the screenplay for another movie, titled Normal, that will star Odenkirk. That one is being directed by Ben Wheatley and will also star Henry Winkler, Lena Headey, Ryan Allen, Billy MacLellan, Brendan Fletcher, Peter Sinkoda, and Jess McLeod.

A release date for Canyon has not yet been announced by Alcon Entertainment.

ComingSoon Senior Editor Brandon Schreur spoke to Colman Domingo about starring in the new Netflix thriller series The Madness. Domingo discussed what drew him to the project, what it’s like to play a James Bond-like character, and more.

“Muncie Daniels is a political consultant-turned-TV pundit who may have lost his way in life. While on a work sabbatical in the Poconos to write the great American novel, Muncie finds himself the only witness to the murder of a well-known white supremacist, and now he’s being framed for the crime,” the synopsis for the series reads. “Muncie is forced to go on the run in a desperate fight to clear his name and unravel a global conspiracy before time runs out. Along the way he’ll reconnect with his family, find unlikely allies, and fight against disinformation in a post-truth age.”

The Madness releases on Netflix on November 28, 2024.

Brandon Schreur: Colman, you’ve had such a spectacular past couple of years. You were just nominated for an Oscar last year for your performance in Rustin, and you were in Sing Sing this year, which I thought was absolutely incredible. Then you get the script for The Madness that comes across. What’s going through your mind when you’re reading it for the first time? What made you want to be involved in this project?

Colman Domingo: I’m telling you, it’s kind of divine in that way. Literally, I was talking to my agent, Elizabeth, about what I’d like to do next. I said, “I’d like another challenge.” I think everything that I do, I set myself up for a challenge, something I’ve never done before. I thought, “Well, I haven’t done a thriller,” and I said, “Who wouldn’t want to have their own James Bond or Three Days of the Condor moment?” I thought, “That’s what I want.” I want something that’s going to push and challenge me in every single way, not just with the character and the story, but also just physically.

I didn’t know exactly what it was, but then I get this offer to play Muncie Daniels in The Madness. I thought, “That’s it.” This doesn’t feel like something I’ll easily get or figure out. I had a lot of questions about Muncie, how to play him, and how to embody him physically. That’s also part of the draw. I thought this was a very difficult character.

Once I understood sort of the mechanics about him, that he’s someone who shifts based on the room that he’s in — he’s a shape-shifter, he’s a coat-switcher. That’s part of the way he was raised, but it’s also part of what makes him successful, being a CNN pundit, as well as a college professor. I wanted to lean into that. For me, it’s always questions that I have about a character and I want to see how they live in me. That was exactly why I wanted to be Muncie Daniels.

Sure. No, definitely, that makes total sense. He’s such an interesting and cool character, too. You brought up James Bond, I was going to bring that up, too. There’s another part in the second episode where your character’s daughter compares you to John Wick. That was going on in the back of my mind, there’s a lot of John Wick, James Bond, and even some Sherlock Holmes going on with this character. Do you welcome those kinds of comparisons or is Muncie a totally different person you’re trying to do something different with?

Yeah. Are you kidding? It’s nice to have him living in that space. I feel like, I love the idea of the John Wick — someone who has all these kinds of tricks and can figure this stuff out. Because Muncie is very smart. He doesn’t know that he has some John Wick qualities. He has no idea. He just sits behind a desk. But he’s been taking jiu-jitsu and doing all this physical work. Then he’s thrust into this space where he’s got to fight for his life, fight for his reputation, and fight for his family.

Therefore, he’s like, ‘I’m the only one who is going to advocate for me. Not the police, not society. So what am I going to do?’ It’s fight or flight. And, at some point in the series, he tries to choose flight because it’s actually easier. But he’s like, “Fighting is something that’s going to call on some other forces that you’re not even aware of.” So I love that he lives in that space of these iconic men.

Totally. it makes for such an interesting show, too, just watching him navigate all that. I mean this in a complimentary way, but the show is kind of frustrating just watching you and your character. It’s not a, ‘Did he do it? Did he not do it?’ kind of show. We know you’re innocent, but you still have to face all kinds of prejudice, people who don’t believe you, and everything like that. I’m wondering, was that frustrating at all? I mean, obviously you read the script, you know what’s going to happen, you know your lines, but, to get into character, is it frustrating to do those scenes?

Well, he’s frustrated the entire time because he’s like, “No, I’m telling the truth.” That’s what I love, the lens of it. You know, your central character, you know he didn’t do it. But now your lens is swinging around and looking at how society views him, looking at what can be used against him — whatever he’s said or done online, you name it, in the court of public opinion.

That’s actually the world we live in right now. Where the truth is doubted, it’s challenged, even when you absolutely know the truth. This is why folks are wrongly incarcerated, you name it. It’s really playing on what we know about the world that we live in, which is the madness.

Thanks to Colman Domingo for taking the time to talk about The Madness.

Thurber, who previously made movies like 2016’s Central Intelligence and 2021’s Red Notice, co-wrote the script with Ellen Shanman.

It was previously announced that Sterling K. Brown, Daniel Quinn-Toye, Henry Cavill, Rita Ora, and John Kim will all star in the film.

Now, Baptista has officially joined the cast of the Voltron film.

Wicked’s Ariana Grande turned down an offer to add more hip-hop to “Popular.”

Wicked, which stars Grande as Galinda Upland/Glinda the Good, is now playing in United States theaters. Based on the popular Broadway play of the same name, the film is the first chapter in a two-part adaptation. Wicked: Part Two will be released in theaters next November.

Stephen Schwartz created the music and lyrics for the original Wicked Broadway show. He then served as a composer, lyricist, and executive producer on the Jon M. Chu-directed film.

Speaking with the Los Angeles Times, Schwartz revealed that he initially thought about changing one of the show’s most noteworthy songs, “Popular,” for the film; however, Grande told him not to do it.

What did Stephen Schwartz say about Wicked, “Popular,” and Ariana Grande?

“In the spirit of being open to new things for the movie, my music team and I thought, let’s refresh the rhythm,” Schwartz recalled. “Let’s, maybe, I don’t know, hip-hop it up a little bit. Ariana said, ‘Absolutely not, don’t do it. I want to be Glinda, not Ariana Grande playing Glinda.’”

Cinematographer Alice Brooks also noted, “‘Popular’ is the first song we shot. The challenge was that we wanted this huge, grand number, but we’re in this very tight, intimate dorm room — our smallest set by far. One night, I woke up suddenly and thought, the sun needs to always rise for Glinda and set for Elphaba. So ‘Defying Gravity’ is one long sunset, and “Popular” is one long sunrise. We put a skylight in the dorm’s dome ceiling so the sun could be our spotlight.”

Along with Grande, Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba Thropp, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero Tigelaar, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum as the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Ethan Slater as Boq Woodsman, Marissa Bode as Nessarose Thropp, and Peter Dinklage as the voice of Dr. Dillamond.

Slumdog Millionaire 2 could be happening.

Directed by Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire is a 2008 British film that is loosely based on Vikas Swarup’s 2005 novel Q & A. Starring Dev Patel as Jamal Malik, the film won a number of Oscars at the Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, and Best Sound Mixing.

Per Variety, Swait Shetty and Grant Kessman’s newly formed production banner Bridge7 has secured the rights to make a sequel to Slumdog Millionaire.

Bridge7 struck the deal with Celador, also known as CPL Productions, the company that produced the original movie with Film4. Bridge7 has also acquired the Slumdog Millionaire television rights.

“Some stories stay with us long after the credits roll and Slumdog Millionaire is undoubtedly one of them,” Shetty and Kessman said in a statement. “Its narrative is universal, cutting across cultural and geographical lines and it embodies the kind of stories we love — ones that bridge entertainment with profound human experiences. What makes Slumdog Millionaire extraordinary is not only its cinematic brilliance — spanning storytelling, music, and its remarkable accolades, but also how it brought together talent from across the world to make a global winning team.”

Slumdog Millionaire 2 will tell the ‘next chapter of Jamal’s journey of discovery’

Celador’s Paul Smith added, “I am delighted that Swati and Grant have chosen the Slumdog sequel to launch their newly formed company. Celador looks forward to working with Bridge7, as the next chapter of Jamal’s journey of discovery unfolds on the screen.”

It is not clear at this time if Patel or any other cast members involved with the 2008 movie will return.

The synopsis for Slumdog Millionaire reads, “Jamal Malik, an 18-year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India’s Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Arrested on suspicion of cheating, he tells the police the incredible story of his life on the streets, and of the girl he loved and lost. Winner of 8 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, this is the ultimate tale of rags to riches.”

A wide theatrical release is being planned for Eli Craig’s Clown in a Cornfield.

Craig is known for directing the 2010 cult horror comedy hit Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, which starred Tyler Labine and Alan Tudyk. Following that, he made Netflix’s Little Evil, which was released in 2017 and stars Adam Scott and Evangeline Lilly.

Now, per Deadline, Craig is working on a new horror project, Clown in a Cornfield.

When is the theatrical release date for Clown in a Cornfield?

With the movie having recently been acquired by RLJE Films and Shudder, Clown in a Cornfield, which is produced by Smile’s Temple Hill, will get a wide theatrical release in the United States on May 9, 2025.

The film is based on the 2020 novel of the same name by Adam Cesare. It stars Katie Douglas, Carson MacCormac, Aaron Abrams, Will Sasso, and Kevin Durand.

“Clown in a Cornfield follows Quinn (Douglas) and her father (Abrams), who have just moved to the quiet town of Kettle Springs hoping for a fresh start,” Deadline’s description of the plot reads. “Instead, she discovers a fractured community that has fallen on hard times after the treasured Baypen Corn Syrup Factory burned down. As the locals bicker amongst themselves and tensions boil over, a sinister, grinning figure emerges from the cornfields to cleanse the town of its burdens, one bloody victim at a time. Welcome to Kettle Springs. The real fun starts when Frendo the clown comes out to play.”

The screenplay for Clown in a Cornfield was written by Craig and Carter Blanchard. Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, Isaac Klausner, John Fischer, Paris Kassidokostas-Latsis, and Terry Dougas produce the movie, while Jean-Luc De Fanti, Max Work, Kostas Tsoukalas, Petersen Harris, George Berman, Dave Bishop, George Hamilton, Daniel Bekerman, Myron John Tataryn, and Blanchard serve as executive producers.

“I’m thrilled to partner with RLJE and Shudder to release this insanely fun, action, horror, comedy where we always wanted it to be seen — in theaters!” Craig said in a statement. “As always in my movies, there’s a deeper theme about the collision of perspectives and ideals that leads to utter mayhem. It was fun in this one however, to let the horror thrills take the lead while the comedic absurdity that I can’t help but see in life, brings a bit of levity.”

Brandon Schreur: I just wanted to say, I know you haven’t made any new seasons recently, but congratulations on the show. It’s one of my favorites, I put it on all the time. I love it.

Jonah Ray: Thank you. Yeah, I did the same thing growing up, it’s always cool that people do that to my episodes, now, which is kind of crazy to do.

Sure. I’ll tell you, it was Christmas 2020 I had COVID the whole time so I couldn’t go to any parties or events or anything. I just watched your episodes the whole day and it turned it from a terrible day into a great day.

Nice, nice. I really wish I could just get everyone out there and do a Clockwork Orange-style version of what you went through with my episodes, and then more people would be into it.

There you go. I’d be for it. To start, I’m kind of curious about your relationship with Mystery Science Theater. Obviously, I know you started around 2016/2017, but the show has been around for so, so long. At what age did you start watching it and get involved?

When I started watching it, Comedy Central wasn’t available where I grew up. I grew up in Hawaii and we just started getting more and more cable channels. I remember MTV finally showed up, then Comedy Central finally showed up. I remember, I loved Comedy Central because they would show old episodes of SNL, all this stuff I’ve always wanted to watch. Then I remember tuning in once and just seeing a black-and-white movie. I went, ‘Oh, they’re playing old movies like every other channel.’ Then I heard the voices, I saw the silhouettes, and I was like, ‘What is going on?’ I thought it was channels on top of each other, maybe.

Then it went straight into a sketch. I remember immediately recognizing Joel Hodgson as a guy from old episodes of SNL, Letterman reruns, and clips. I was like, ‘Oh, it’s that prop comic!’ I immediately became obsessed with it because, at that same time, I was getting into weirdo comedy and was also getting into watching old sci-fi horror movies. I was starting to do puppet stuff for my cousins’ birthday parties. It all kind of collided to become one of my favorite things.

Oh, sure. And I’m sure it must have been so great to get the news that you are going to be on the show and be the new host. Mind-blowing, I’m sure.

Yeah, that’s something I don’t know how much I’ve ever really processed because of how insane it feels. It seems so outside of any kind of reality that I would have ever expected in my life. I’ve had a very hard life in comedy and I’ve gotten to do a lot of stuff that is like things that I liked growing up. I got to do a stand-up show with Kumail Nanjiani on Comedy Central and it’s like, ‘Oh, that’s like the shows that I used to watch.’ Or I got to do this other thing and it’s like, ‘This is like what I like.’ I’ve gotten to do a lot of things that are like the things I liked.

Then, when Joel asked me to host the new version, it was like, ‘This is a one-to-one thing.’ This isn’t like Mystery Science Theater, it is Mystery Science Theater. It’s still pretty mind-blowing where I kind of go, ‘Did I get into Mystery Science Theater for the sole reason that I somehow knew I was going to be in Mystery Science Theater?’ Time is a flat circle, I don’t know.

You know, it all worked out in the end.

Yeah, it’s really mind-blowing and I don’t ever diminish it in my head for a second.

Sure, definitely. What has the response looked like since you’ve been a part of the show? It’s been seven or eight years now, probably. I’m assuming they like you because they brought you back for more seasons.

The people who make it like me, of course. I knew, when I was announced, there was going to be somewhat tricky. Historically, a new host on MST has never really gone over too smoothly. It went from Joel to Mike, of course, and I was ready for that as well. What’s wild is people seem to like it and seem to like me, but the wild thing is that it didn’t feel like it moved the needle much in my everyday life. Now, since it’s been on so long, now I’ll be out at a restaurant or a bar, going to see a band or something like that, and people will come up to me and be like, ‘Oh, when I was in middle school…’ Because now they’re adults and time has passed. They’ll be like, ‘My parents used to show me your episodes all the time, you were my first host.’ It’s weird, the delay that happens, because you realize — I’m not running into children while the show is going on, but now that they’re older, they’ll go, ‘I used to watch it all the time.’ Which makes me feel ancient, but it also makes me feel good.

As it does. I’m sure it being on Netflix helps, though, because it’s so easily accessible.

It’s just there! Yeah, I love that aspect. It’s always there for people to re-watch or explore. People go, ‘I liked it and now I’m showing my kids.’ There’s that generational aspect to it.

Sure, totally. I know we have the Turkey Day event that’s coming up and coming back again this year. That’s always been really popular. You’re involved with hosting this year and I just got a list, I think yesterday, of all the people who are going to be involved. There are a lot of really cool names: Matthew Lillard, Mike Flanagan. It’s really exciting. What are you excited about with this year’s event?

It’s funny because I feel like Mystery Science Theater has always been its own little niche, its own little culture. I think it’s going to be fun for everyone to see these people that they’ve known for a long time [who are] within the culture or they like the show and they want to talk about their favorite episodes.

Another fun aspect, I have a personal connection with all of the people who are doing it. I thought that was a nice little aspect of having it be a Turkey Day thing, which is about friends and family getting together to celebrate. I like that I was able to show that these are just people, even though they’ve done these things, they’re just friends and they’re fans of the show, we can all be nerdy and enjoy the show. I think it’s going to be a really fun thing for people to see.

I always used to love that. Anytime I read an interview with an actor or a band, I would love when they would talk about other actors or other bands. I would be like, ‘I want to see what they like and if we have similar tastes.’ If Mike Flanagan, if his pick for an episode is what I pick, or Matthew Lillard or Kumail Nanjiani. I’m very excited.

No, totally. That’s one of the great things I’ve always loved about the show, too. On the surface, it seems niche and nerdy but the more you talk to people, especially in this business, it seems like everyone is a fan and everyone has experiences watching it while growing up and they love it. It’s cool to see how many people respond to it so strongly.

And sometimes I’m still surprised. I worked with Matthew Lillard a couple of times and it wasn’t until recently when he was like, ‘Oh, I’ve got to say, I really liked you on Mystery Science Theater.’ I was like, ‘You watched it?’ and he goes, ‘I love that show!’ I go, ‘Why didn’t you bring it up? I would have been less nervous meeting you.’

Exactly. I know there was a crowdfunding effort for another season that didn’t quite make it back in 2023. It’s been a year so I’m wondering if there have been conversations about doing more Mystery Science Theater?

You know, there’s always something bubbling. There’s always conversations; there’s always something kind of being worked out. The show has gone away and come back so many times that it would be ever so hard to say that anything is going to be a comeback. MST3K is inevitable. And it always will be.

Sure. I’m crossing my fingers, waiting for the next one.

They’re still making bad movies, so you know.

That kind of leads into what I was going to ask you next. How much does being a part of Mystery Science Theater affect your brain when watching movies? Is it hard to just put one on normally or are you always thinking about commentary in the back of your mind?

Yeah. It’s like it’s become compulsive behavior where it just comes out of me, sometimes. Luckily, I have somewhere to channel it. My friend Doug Benson, he does a movie interruption show once a month at a theater in Los Angeles at the Dynasty Typewriter. So I can kind of hold it in, we can go watch a movie there, and I’ll get it all out of my system. But it is always kind of there.

I find myself, now, seeing all the gaps in movies. I was rewatching The Princess Bride yesterday and I was like, ‘Oh, there’s a boom shadow in this scene.’ My eagle eye is now picking apart my favorite movies. Making a movie is hard. I made a movie that came out this year. There are very hard things you have to do. The fact that it gets made is a miracle, the fact that it’s watchable is beyond anything. It’s not like we’re tearing it apart, but it is kind of hard to go, ‘Meh, he had his pencil in the other hand.’ Dumb stuff like that.

Oh, I’m sure. But it’s probably still kind of fun, I’m sure.

Oh, for sure. You’d have to ask the people around me.

That’s fair. I’m curious, I’m sure you probably get asked what the worst movie you had to watch for the show is all the time. I’m curious if there are any that you actually, genuinely enjoy. I don’t know if you’ve gone back and rewatched any of them you had to do for the show, but are there any that come to mind that it’s like, ‘You know, that wasn’t too bad.’ Because, I’ll be honest, I don’t hate Killer Fish. I kind of liked that movie.

Yeah, Killer Fish is fun, it trots along really nicely, and it’s not like the worst movie by far. I think, I was really blown away by The Mask, which was our Halloween episode. We were watching it, we’d be in the writer’s room watching it and going, ‘This is GOOD. This is a good movie.’ It’s really well-acted, it’s incredibly shot. The 3-D sequences, of course, are really silly, but it’s like a really well-done movie about addiction. I went and watched it afterward and I was like, ‘This is a quality film. This is a very quality film.’

There are still some movies I’m so glad I’ll never have to see again. Like Mac and Me or Munchie, that was another one that I absolutely despised.

I was just rewatching the one Christmas one last night and, hoo. That’s a bad one.

Oh, Christmas Dragon or The Christmas That Almost Wasn’t?

The Christmas That Almost Wasn’t.

That one is interesting, too, because it’s all about land ownership and then it turns into a courtroom drama.

They randomly start playing with toys for like 20 minutes.

Yeah! And I think one of the more interesting concepts of that one, too, is like Santa has never dealt with children who are actually alive, he only knows them when they’re asleep. He has to deal with that, but then it’s also about the birth of the mall Santa. All from this weirdo Italian movie about Santa losing the deed to the North Pole. Like, dude, own, don’t lease.

It’s a weird one. I’ve always wondered this, but how many times do you have to watch a movie for the show? Like, how many times did you have to watch The Christmas That Almost Wasn’t before you were in there recording?

That’s a common question and it’s something I always thought, too. It’s kind of hard to say because, every day, you have about 10-11 minutes of the movie you have to get through. So, certain parts of the movie you watch a lot of times because you’re trying to figure out where the jokes should be. Other times, there’s not much you can do so you just kind of trot through like, ‘That’s the joke for that part, there’s too much talking to move anything in.’ It’s hard to say because, some parts, you might watch 100 times, other parts you might watch 20 times. Overall, you’re not really sure how much you watched the entire thing. You have to put these blinders on because, if you get too eagle eye view of the job, you get too overwhelmed and go, ‘We’re never going to make it. We’re never going to make it through this movie with how many jokes we have to write.’ We just go, ‘What’s in this five minutes, what’s in this five minutes?’

Sure. And I’m sure that’s actually hard work. I know some people can just go, ‘Oh, you’re just watching movies the whole time,’ but to watch and rewatch something, especially when it’s something bad like this, I’m sure that can take it out of you.

It’s brain-melting. All the writers will always have a ton of jokes or the perfect moment, but there are these other moments where it’s a two-minute-long fight sequence or chase sequence. Nobody has that many jokes, so that’s when the real work happens and it’s like, ‘What are we going to talk about here? We can’t just have a bunch of jokes, we have to have it be a conversation or do we start singing a song?’ It’s just like any kind of comedy writing where it’s like, ‘What’s the premise here? How are we going to tell this moment? What’s the scene? What’s the sketch?’

Sure, that makes sense. But it all turns out in the end, I love all of it. The songs and everything.

Yeah, because of the aspect of the thing — the movie always keeps on going, the train keeps on moving along. If a joke is kind of so-so or a dud, it’s just like, ‘Well, it doesn’t matter, the movie is still going.’ It’s not going to stop and go, ‘That was bad.’

And there’s always another joke coming 30 seconds later.

Exactly, yeah.

There is something else I’ve always wondered, going back to fan responses. Despite it being in the theme song, do you still get people asking you about how you eat and breathe up there?

Yes. I remember at a certain point where someone was mad at me because they asked how I eat and breathe up there. I was like, ‘You should really just relax.’ And they were like, ‘Okay man, I was just trying to ask a question about the show.’ I was like, ‘Oh no, I thought we were having a fun rapport as two fans of the show.’

I like to think, though, that I have a little hydroponics garden where I have like little tomatoes or stuff like that. Or, what I would have is, from Big Top Pee-wee, where I have a plant that grows hot dogs. That’s probably what I have. That’s how I eat. How I breathe, I don’t know. I think maybe Tom Servo’s dome is an air-oxygen multiplier.

There you go. You have a whole explanation.

It’s canon! Put it in, it’s canon!

Matt Lieberman has been tapped to write the screenplay for the movie.
“Maximum Effort has several projects in development with Paramount including Boy Band, a comedy about a music group’s reunion; Starter Villain, an adaptation of the bestselling science-fiction novel by John Scalzi; and Eloise, a big-screen version of the beloved family book series,” Variety’s article notes. “In February, Maximum Effort announced it was renewing its deal with Paramount through 2026.”

Reynolds was recently seen reprising his role as Wade Wilson in Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine, which is now available to stream on Disney+. He also portrayed Cal in John Krasinski’s IF earlier this year and will soon be seen playing a character in the live-action/animation hybrid movie Animal Friends, which will be released in August 2025.

The Mighty Mouse movie does not yet have a release date.
